Seroquel brand name is FAR better than generic

Posted by myco on March 29, 2009, at 17:40:29

Renewed my script for seroquel last night...on advice I asked for the real brand name...normally I go generic due to lack of quid. Generic would make me sleepy mostly, rarely knock me out....brand name is FAR better. Out like a light and weird...less depression next day compared to generic. I dont get that one at all...sure inert ingredients will help with absorption etc but make the med work better? really? ok.

Myco So glad it's working better for you. I still think brand name is better. It's the insurance companies here insisting on generics and they do differ. Love Phillipa

Yeah, I've noticed quite a difference in generic versus brand and I know it isn't my imagination. Seen it here many times. My doc is strongly pro-brand anti-generic because he has seen the phenomenon enough times to convince him it is real and not placebo or imagined. He does have a couple generic pain meds that are better than brand though.

I think this is the first time I've heard about the issue with Seroquel. Interesting, but not surprising.

Are you in Canada, where it already has expired ?

I'm also concerned about the Seroquel expiration, here in the US, which has several expirations but appears to have the expiration for BP/Schizophrenia, its main first use on Sep 26, 2011. It expires for pediatric use in 2012.

I'm not normally concerned about generics but generic APs do concern me especially when I am unusually sensitive to side effects from them, as opposed to most of the other things I take that have been generic for the most part for years, especially the benzodiazepine.

Dont quote me here but Health Canada doesnt work like that...expiration of a med is in terms of patent - allowing generic companies to introduce their own version. As for indictions...these dont expire as far as I know. If a med has been proven effective and is indicated via health canada testing for a disorder...thats in stone until something changes as far as I know...Canadian correct me if im wrong though. I do know meds come up for review every so often but I think its just to review effectiveness in light of newer meds? not sure.

We have generic seroquel here...its ok but brand name way better like i said. this generic is also made in canada for you americans that think canadian meds are "shady" and come from places like india and sh*t lol bollocks. mabye some but we have pfizer and all the same companies here.

i havent noticed much of a diff from generic alprazolam to xanax...took klon and temaz in generic...both good though

I think there are some exclusivity rules and patents, otherwise even with drug cost regulations nothing would get sold even if it is Pfizer Ltd, instead of Inc. But the way it is, is over my head, its a little more arcane, and the length is shorter.

Here, approximately 17 years is the patent for medication, but that doesnt mean 17 years on the pharmacy shelf, that means 17 years when FOO-234 was first discovered as a molecule in Phase I and patented. So 5 years could be shaved off of that.

No, I know its made in Ontario, the generic, from what I can tell.

Canada does use generics thoughfrom India as we do in the US, they have been approved recently from places like Mr. Reddy's and a few others.

They also use Teva, from Israel, just like we do as well.

No, I don't think generic use in Canada is any more "shadier" than here. Health Canada's approval of things if in any way can actually be longer for some things than here and shorter than others, just like EMEA.

But you do have a modern regulatory board and you're all really polite. :) Okay, I had to throw in a joke there, I like Canada.

I think he might have got the hoser references, but Stompin' Tom? I don't think his influence ever crossed the border.
