strange Nardil side-effect - li'l pot belly

Posted by g_g_g_unit on March 21, 2009, at 2:34:48

hi one of the stranger, though more innocuous, side-effects i've been getting on Nardil is a small belly which tends to hang around all day. i am suffering from constipation and gas, so i don't know if that's a contributing factor, yet i don't really feel 'bloated'; the belly's firmer, like after you've just eaten too much food. aside from the presence of my new-found buddy, i'm otherwise pretty slim (weighing in at a grand total of ~140 pounds). i was just concerned that this might be the beginning stages of weight gain or something . .

Well no experience with the MAOI's but if you're saying you have constipation and bloating. I don't recall anyone saying this is contraindicationed or dangerous. Was thinking how bout a fleets enema or call your doc and ask for a laxative and that way you can rule out the hard belly being stool. Phillipa

It probably is the beginning stages of weight gain. Nardil is notorious for that. I went from 200 to 240lbs on it. However, I think the weight gain tends to level off after about a year or so, whereas that's not the case with other drugs where you may put weight on slowly but it never seems to stop or level off. I think that's true of most of AP's, including Abilify, and some of the tricyclics. I've gained 70lbs on Abilify over about three years.

The med will effect the deposition and breakdown of adipose(fat) tissue - most people will experience at least a lil weight gain but it can be fought. This can also be gas/constipation and water retention...as ive noticed on nardil...my belly tends to change sizes based on water i think. regular cardil will fight this off to some degree based on your own physiology.

well i haven't actually gained any weight yet (aside from a pound or so, which could also be put down to a weight training program i've recently initiated while on the drug) so that's why i was curious. i'm guessing it's water retention. i posted a message addressed to you in an earlier thread but you may have missed it; i was just wondering if there was a possibility that higher doses of nardil might be more energising. my CBT therapist and i concluded that 60mg might not be the best option since whenever at rest (i.e. reading, watching a movie), regardless of the time of day, i fall asleep, which is counter-productive since those activities fall under my prescribed exposures. it also has not touched my OCD, or done very much at all in fact now that the initial euphoria's cleared up. my thoughts were to maybe move to 75mg since thankfully the insomnia has cleared up on its own. is there the possibility the raise in dose could make a dramatic difference?

I really got that aswell on Nardil. it was pot belly. not at all saggy like body fat, but a real firm pot belly just below my ribs.. it got pretty big, and I gained alot of weight too. Im off Nardil and the Pot Belly and constipation is gone.
I used mild laxitives quite a few times on Nardil

yeah that's the one - like i said, through a strict diet/exercise regime, i'm yet to gain any weight, though the belly remains ..
