Does anyone know how quickly Zyprexa takes to work fully for anxiety? I'm going on holiday in 10 days time with my girlfriend and really can't face going with the way I'm feeling at the moment with my terrible anxiety (GAD and panic disorder).
We can't cancel as it's already been paid for and we will lose our money, so I thought of taking something as a 'boost' while I'm on holiday to get me through it. I'm already taking:
75mg Effexor XR
600mg Lithium
40mg BuspironeBenzos aren't an option due to the tolerance I've developed to them.
If I take 10mg Zyprexa two days before we leave and again everyday after, will it's anti-anxiety effect kick-in in those two days?
Thanks

From what I've read heard it kicks in quite quickly. Hope it's true. Love Phillipa

I took zyprexa for 8 years, so I know a little bit about it.
Before I get to that, what you might try is sampling some now, before you go, so you know what to expect.
10mg is a large dose. Honestly, I would try 2.5mg first and don't make any decisions on doses until after that. If 2.5mg doesn't do it, try 5mg the next day or the day after that.
For me zyprexa worked fast. How fast? Well, how about 2 hours. Though longterm benefits do buildup over time, the effects of zyprexa are almost immediate.
The reason you might want to play with the lowest dose you find helpful is to avoid oversedation. Taking a 5mg or 10mg in the middle of the day for an anxiety situation will work for the anxiety, but could also make you too sleepy to be good for any activities.
Sometimes I would take little chunks of zyprexa, maybe 1.5mg to 2mg, spread out through the day, for a smooth effect without the heavy sedation.
After a month or so on zyprexa the sedation was much less. But the antianxiety, antipanic, and prosocial part of it was very good. I took it once a day, about 4pm, for a relaxed evening, and by 8pm I was ready for bed, with zero sedation the next day.
I remember one time after I had quit zyprexa I had an unexplained panic attack out of town. It was a nightmare. I still carried zyprexa around with me in case of emergency. Well, that emergency happened. Two hours after my emergency dose, I was calm as could be, mingling with the crowd, somewhat sedated, but no problem.
And of course it is worth considering that mileage varies, not all drugs work for everyone. I can't imagine zyprexa not helping someone's anxiety, but I guess anything's possible.
My dose the entire 8 years was 5mg. I had the prozac jitters and was also taking the stimulant provigil, so anxiety was a real problem until zyprexa joined the mix. Zyprexa smoothed all that out real well.

Yes it will. You will get the effects the first day. But to be safe taking it the 2 days before is a better plan. Then it will have the added effects from building up in your system.

Bleauberry is right if you are not use to the zyprexa it might be better to try some lower doses first. See what happens and go from there. I take 10mg a day but I've been taking it for 11 years. Works great for anxiety!

Thanks. I've took it before and it did help. It didn't get rid of the anxiety completely, but it did help. I had to go up to 10mg before I really started to feel it's effects. You've taken it for 11 years?? Do you take it everyday? How do you get on with the weight gain?? I put a load of weight on when I took it for just a couple of months!!

I take it every day. Weight has been relatively steady. I put on a few pounds at first but since then stayed the same. I exercise that seems to help too.

Have you had any problems with tardive dyskinesia?

No. I was on Zyprexa 5mg for 8 years, with a dose of 20mg for a few months.
Sorry, I know you asked this question to another poster, but I was hoping you might find another response helpful.
This is the end of the thread.
