Is Chloral hydrate still used for insomnia? Does it only come in liquid form? I am thinking of asking for it to help me sleep. I have tried just about everything except for barbituates.
Anyone here take it? Thoughts?
Thanks!

Maxime,
I haven't tried it. That's an old fashioned sleep med. There's probably reasons it's not used much anymore.
Not up to speed with your history. You've tried the usual? mirtazapine, benzos, Seroquel, gabapentin, doxepin? What's your AD, if any?

I used it up until about five years ago yes only liquid in the states. Not many pdocs use it and no alchohol as becomes a Mickey Finn with it. Maxie how ya doing other than not sleeping? Phillipa

Its as ancient as Placidyl.
I would try a usual sleep dose of amitriptyline before going near that stuff. Even that carries enough liability.
Or as suggested, doxepin.
I don't recall though if you're on an MAOI, which would rule out those two.
I would find few doctors who would prescribe it today, maybe older doctors who prescribe medications not used commonly.
It really is not safe.

Thanks Phillipa. I'm not doing that great. My depression is severe right now. Woe is me.

>Thanks Jay. I need to find something that works. What is the usual sleep dose for amitriptyline. I think I used to take 10 mg but I don't remember.

I second Jay's opinion. It was the drug that finally tipped the scales and was the demise of Anna Nicole Smith, on top of all the other substances she was on, according to the most reliable news sources.

I could get the chloral hydrate prescribed because my pdoc is ancient (in his 80s), but will stick to something safer.
What is the usual amount of amitriptyline used for sleep.
Thanks for all your input!

Maxime,If I were taking the same as you're taking . . . and I have taken Wellbutrin until a few months ago . . I would can the Wellbutrin and raise the other or get a less arousing AD.
I found out by accident that if I forgot to take my late afternoon dose of Wellbutrin, I slept like a baby that night. I thought, "Here I am taking an arousing AD during the day, and I have to take a bunch of things at night so my mind will stop, and go to sleep".
If you say you need the arousal during the day, there are other short acting arousing things that don't last around the clock.
just my personal experience . . .
