Hi all,
So, I am getting used to the MAOI diet - no problems so far.
I was wondering if anybody knows of any safe veggie burgers or "chicken" patties for us MAOI users? I started trying to decipher the ingredient list and I was stunned by how many contain cheddar, yeast extract and the soy...don't even get me started on the soy! I have yet to figure out which soy things are and are not fermented. Anyway, I'm a vegetarian and it would be awfully nice to have convenience foods like these in the freezer, if there are any that are safe to eat I would love to know.
This message board is a great help and I thank all of you for your answers and support and Dr. Bob for creating and moderating!

I'm also vegetarian and was on MAOIs for years...and I was surprised at how many veggie burgers contain yeast extract.
For frozen veggie burgers, the only brand that I found was safe was the Amy's brand - they are in the organic, frozen section at the grocery stores that I frequent. I don't remember if all of the different flavors were safe but I know that some of them were.
I also found some fresh, not-frozen veggie burgers that were safe - they were in the produce section. I usually bought a package and froze them individually.
Amy's also had soups and some other things that were ok for the MAOI diet - I don't know where if Amy's is available where you are, but their website is www.amys.com - maybe they can help you locate a store in your area that carries their brand.
Hope this helps!

Thank you SO MUCH! I love Amy's products and their website is really terrific - they have very clear keys so that you know what is not in the foods. Yeah! I didn't even think to look at Amy's veggie burgers because for some reason, the grocery store doesn't keep them with all the other veggie products (like Boca and Gardengurger). Strange, huh? I was on the site for a while last night making a big list of all the things I can have from them so that I don't have to spend forever in the freezer section reading ingredients. :) :) :)
It made me realize that the old standby of ordering a veggie burger at a restaurant isn't really a viable solution since there are so many of them with yeast extract and soy. Do you mind sharing with me what you, as a vegetarian and an MAOI user, generally order at restaurants? Any "safe" dishes that you would fall back on when you go to different places like Chinese, Thai, Italian, Mexican?
I was thinking that ravioli is probably a good bet, as long as there is no aged cheese mixed in with the ricotta. Bean and rice burritos or veggie and rice burritos, sans cheese for Mexican. I love Thai food but I've always gotten the different things with tofu...now I have no idea - I guess I could just get things with no tofu and extra vegetables?
I don't go out really since I've been so depressed but I am going to be travelling (which will mean eating out more I'm sure) which is what made me think of this stuff.
Thank you for your help!
