Which stimulant makes you the most social?

Posted by qbsbrown on December 14, 2008, at 18:45:16

or shall I say, makes it so you aren't antisocial. I'm super social online w/ ritalin and dexedrine, but out in real life they make me antisocial. I think it's cause it's making your brain focus so hard, other parts take the back seat?

How's the new one?

Adderall....

Because it has levoamphetamine which stimulates more norephineprhine and exitement. Dextroamphetamine is only for focus, motivation.

I cannot take adderall, makes me too nervous.

Vyvanse made me nuts, but it's just a slowly released form of dextroamphetamine with l-lyrosine to keep it from being broken down by metabolism. And.....it built up in my system, i had horrible reactions to it.

Take care

Adderall seems to take a big hit out of social phobia in my case. However, it's only a quick fix for that and sometimes I wonder if its just a false sense of confidence. However, Adderall runs through my system too fast and as you have to take more of it to compensate that, you start edging toward hypomanic like states. Emsam patch, selegiline, helped me with social problems, because that also too, coverts to L-Amphetamine in the system, although not a lot, but it does build up over time as it's and MAOI, allowing for similar effects. Concerta does not offer any further improvements with social difficulties, but it 'feels' more 'normal' in my system. exp at 108 mg/day (where I actually feel a therapeutic response at that dose, it wakes me up) As I also wake up, due to the hypersomnia during the day, I tend to be more social as my other meds like Strattera, Depakote, Lamicatal, and Zoloft seems to reallly normalize social difficulties over a long term consistent time frame than lets say-Adderall. Because with Adderall the social phobia becomes 'bi-polar' like, because the improvements only last 2-4 hours a dose, then I become avoident or 'wigged' out if I have too much Adderall built up in the brain. For those who can be on an MAOI, give Emsam a try (its expensive), it will take a few weeks for the Selegiline to build up and the L-Amphetamine, but it may worth a try for those with Dopamine dependent social phobia, with out having to slam short-term stimulants to try to tackle a long acting disorder like social anxiety, phobia, or avoidant personality. Like mentioned stimulants are most effect at treat short-term attention, motivation, impulsivity issues. --hope that helps, Jake

so at the end everybody has something bad to say about all stimulants and no one takes them forever
I have never seen a poster on stimulants wich had not had to stop taking them
seems they are only a quick relief , a false exit

Provigil/Alertec/modafinil definitely makes me much more social & active, especially since I've been on Cymbalta as well. A *moderate* amount of coffee helps too. Yup, all stimulants do eventually produce tolerance; almost any med will, because your body tries to stabilize itself at what it thinks is normal.

Buspar gets a lot of bad press, I think because most people don't _feel_ a strong immediate effect, but I've always found 20-30 mg/day makes me more social, more assertive, and more tolerant of stress. The effect is quite subtle though, and I find it most useful in combinaton with other AD's.

Ritalin. A little on the coffee jitter side of things, but still much more talkative and mingling.

Adderall makes me really withdrawn due to the way it makes me feel frieked out, trembling, and more depressed.

Back in the old days before whatever went wrong with me went wrong, Adrafinil added to Prozac+Zyprexa was a relaiable social combination. Unlike the other stimulants Adrafinil really needs 3 to 6 weeks to do its thing.

tepi,

Jade again, I was on low dose ritalin for over 12 years, I ran a business, built a house, raised twin boys, shall I go on? I have ADD, during that time I only went from 5mg 3x day to 5mg 5x day and that was "as needed". I only stopped because of a nasty depression caused by overwhelming situational stuff. (my 1st depression) PDoc made me stop ritalin cause I'm on Parnate. I'll be right back on it when i'm off MAOI. What i really like about ritalin, is that if I needed it, I could take it then. If you try it, get the immediate release.

My treating psychdoc g.p. and therapist work collaborative with my issues. I have no idea if its ethical they are friends which was pointed out to me from the get go. My health is at stake ..i didnt blink when told. I am writing this just to inform until Parnate settles into the system ..they have formed the opinion that stimulates right now are not in my best interest. Yep its frustrating..lack of energy motivation etc..i have a great deal of respect for all of them. Its been pointed out that my illness is complicated..s.a. ocd gad dep/anx epilepsy. anyway i am praying a neuropsychdoctor in the new year with his considerd opinion. may add some value..i am pretty sure they think i may go manic...had manic episode few times in the past..not bipolar. any way thats my story, i would just love to have a hit of something from the ugly days. paddo

Hi paddo!

Just never know where you might pop-up. I'm sorry your condition is so complicated. I see mainly various forms of anxiety, depression, and epilepsy. With lots of anxiety and epilepsy, you can still take a stimulant? I geuss your Docs know best. Do you mind telling me if your Epilepsy is under control? What do you take for it? Also, and I'm sorry if any of this is repeat, how long on Parnate? What did your Docs mean by "until Parnate settles into your system" ? Do they mean s/e's, dose, duration, a/d effect? The reason I ask is I'm ready to add stim to my Parnate and wondered when your docs considered it safe. How do you mean your health is at stake? Is this why you are seeing Neurologist? Well paddo, i'll be thinking of you and please let me know about your health. My son, as you know, is in the care of a nuerologist as well.

Take care of yourself, nothing from the ugly days!

~Jade

I definatly take up for stimulants, it's just you have to think....about how it works, how it affects the dopamine systems, and when it's going to "wear" off.

Alot of people just complain about, well, i've been on and off stimulants, main, Adderall(1999-2005), Dexedrine(2005), Vyvanse (2008), Dexedrine Spansule (current)

Spansules work......the do release, but there not as the tablets which desolve so quicky, it goes you system too fast. I take 45mg (3 15mg Spansules 9:00am)

You just have to know that, their are bad effects, because when it wears off, it's just the way it's worked for years.

Now....excessive use[keyword] will litterly alter your motivation, because it "directy" changes sometimes the dopamine system, which is the reward, motivation, and in result, that's why it's a bad reputation.

Now M-Amphetamine (Desoxyn) is definetly more toxic than dextroamphetamine, it's powerful because of the methly-group that's attached.

That's why.....

Dextroamphetamine...Dexedrine or Dextrostat. If taken with an MAOI, do not take Dexedrine. It is the long-lasting of the two. I do not have to go into detail about why that is considered worse as you are all smart enough. They are both ridiculously cheap too.

But, if you can get your hands on Provigil (and it does the trick without maddening you with it's cost and/or PA)then that would be a better choice if you think coffee works for you. But I am guessing that another poster said that....

GHB or Xyrem (RX) in low dose acts upon parts of the brain that make you want to socialize. Serotonin and GABA B receptors.

I think the coffee help a lot for social anxiety...maybe it seem to be not very strong...but some studies show that it's make more interractions between people on it, they are more sociable than usual, more confident...but for general anxiety, coffee is not very good, it's make you think more about your personnals problems.

Ritalin is not very strong and don't stay a long time in your system, maybe concerta of focusin-XR version will be a nicer choice. One thing is sure, stimulant are addictive, in the same way than the benzo drugs. IF you don't have ADD problem and just lacking energy like me, you should avoid them because you will increase the chance to became addicted on them.

For the others, I don't try them. I know that Provigil (Modafinil), a drug test on the soldiers of the gulf war back in 1991, is less addictive...but it's expensive...Adderall-xr seem to be also a good choice, but that's also very expensive.

For now, i'm experiencing a nice energy level on an old AD (Parnate) + coffee...especially in the morning...but I can't encounter the usual lack of energy in the PM and the need to do a nap in the afternoon...so coffee is my friend for now, since I don't want to blend an old MAOI with a stimulant...Since stimulant higher the blood pressure and the Parnate also, I don't want to end up at the hospital...
