I noticed Remeron as a NE alpha2 antagonist and Trazodone as a NE alpha1 antagonist. I'm taking remeron for sleep but am finding it is causing increased agitation/frustration. Does anyone have an opinion as to trazadones likelihood of causing the same effect? I'm sure the NE is causing my agitation but I do not know the difference between the 2 NE actions of the two meds?

Are you sure thats how trazadone works?
wiki lists it as "trazodone's antidepressant effects may be due to its antagonistic effects at 5-HT2 receptors.[3][citation needed]"Alpha 1 effects smooth muscle contraction, nothing to do with neurotransmitters.. alpha 2 inhibits neurotransmitters which is how mirtazapine works.

Mav didn't do a thing for me no sleep no tiredness no weightgain what's that mean? that was at 15mg. Phillipa ps don't understand the neurotransmitters.

They work in quiet different ways...most alpha2s are inhibitors receptors which stop NE or other neurones from firing. And a few alpha2 postsynaptically, i only know of them in relationship to adhd: they help promote concentration. Alpha1s don't help with concentration they are afaik exclusivly postsynaptic and excitory. I haven't seen it written anywhere but i think the alpha1 blockade basically just causes sedation/calm in the brain. The mirt is a promiscous drug, its hard to know how its causing agitation, but needless to say mirt and traz are very different drugs...

I think Trazodone is a superior sleep drug. It causes fewer side effects. 50-100mg will make most people sleep soundly with very few if any side effects so long as you sleep 8 hours.

I don't know much about trazadone as it's not available here... remeron makes you sleepy due to its strong anti-histmine effect. remeron use to help for sleep but now it's causing agitation... to the point of uncomfortable sensation! Last night I did not take it, I took zopiclone 7.5 instead.... 2 hours later and still awake, took another zopiclone!
I'm going to see my GP today and ask for Seroquel. I hope it will solve my sleep and agitation issues. It should work well with my lithium and zoloft. Sorry for rambling...tired..stressed...took the day off work...feel guilty but I have to get better.

Just back from GP with a script for seroquel 100mg. Hope it helps the agitation and insomnia. I'm to start with 25mg and increase by 25 every 2nd night until I reach 100mg. So my new cocktail will be;
Seroquel 100mg
Lithium 600mg

Mav remeron and benyrl doesn't put me out either. So guess antihistamines just don't work for me. Thanks for the answer. Love Phillipa

You won't have to worry about agitation cause you'll be sound asleep, haha. My son takes Seroquel and one sleepy morn I accidentally took his Seroquel with my vitamins. Luckily I wasn't on any medications at the time. It took about 20 minutes until my banister started looking a little blurry and I got upstairs in time to sleep ALL DAY. But that wears off cause although my son sleeps more than he would, he's fully awake most of the day. For some reason he sleeps at school, haha. Oh, he takes (in split doses) 300mg. I only took 100mg (his morn dose) and your daily dose. You should be fine, and I DO think it will help alot with agitation. Again, fatigue s/e will diminish probably completely on 100mg.
