Loud insulting thoughts (not voices)

Posted by linkadge on November 23, 2008, at 17:30:53

Hi, I get periods where my thoughts are so loud and negative. I don't hear voices but I experience my thoughts as being something external that is attacking me.

Anyone experience this?

Thanks

I was going to say it sounds like something in the OC spectrum, possibly with at inge of psychosis to it.

That's just my opinion.

Or psychotic depression.

You really need a doctor to diagnose this one, we can't play armchair psychiatrists, but I think there's depression and OC going on too.

When my depression has peeked, and my anxiety is cheering on those low's? My mind can't control the offending ruminations, hell is but a thought away? If you can relate Link, then yes, I get those insulting thoughts. That's when I lean on my wife for support, and an extra dose of clonazepam. When I'm battling my inner thoughts, it's like I have a body double hovering around me like a vulture, seeing how far he can push me??
And no, I have never been diagnosed with pyschosis, atypical or other, just good ole depression and anxiety, better known as bipolar 2.
My wife is always right, "it will pass, hang in there, you've battled through it before". She is always right..... you hang in there too, Link.

Regards, Rick

I experience something I think is probably similar -- those inner voices/self-talk gets pretty insulting, very demoralizing, and pretty much as damaging as anything anyone else could say to me. Sometimes, when my anxiety is high enough, or I'm depressed enough, I can't seem to shut them off.

It's something I work on in therapy. Mostly, the voices are internalizations of things my family members said -- and in some cases still say! -- to me. Let's just say that my family includes some people who aren't very pleasant to be related to, 'K? Many of the things I "hear" are directly from various family members.

A lot of those things fuel the anorexia, as well as OCD-type obsessions.

It's a place where I think basic CBT style techniques help me most -- recognize when I'm doing it, and try to replace those cruelties with the sorts of things I'd say to someone I cared about. I'll let you know if it ever actually works -- I'm still in the "recognizing" stage now, mostly because some of them are so ingrained for me. (Remember -- I'm about 20 years older than you are. I've had a lot more time to get stuck in some of these ruts.)

Good luck.

i don't quite see the difference between thoughts and voices?

Sometimes when i am feeling bad i see/feel physical harm happening to me, like baseball bat hitting me, electric drill drilling into my face, fingers torn off. I feel like i deserve it.

SWEARING WARNING!!!!! DONT READ ON IF YOU ARE OFFENDED BY SWEAR WORDS. I WONT WRITE THE FULL WORDS

Yep, I used to, I managed to get them down to a dull mummer now with CBT as Racer mentioned, is excellent for this. Find a good psychologist if you don't have one. You have to challenge them when they start. The traffic light CBT technique worked well for me in conjunction with clonazepam later on.

Do you notice that you're not even aware that it's going on? Then you think, man this has been screaming in my head for over 2 hours now.

(Red light) So you just say stop! (Amber light) That thought is not true, has no merit what so ever and is a total load of crap, acknowledging it is important and so is challenging it then dismissing it. (Green Light) go about your normal business.

Now this took me ages to master, because at first it was every 5 seconds, now I might get 1 everyday or every other day.

Honestly linkadge, it's a pain in the *ss but persist with it. I wasn't prescribe the clonazepam until I had a pretty good grip on it and then the clonazepam blew it away.

It's such a basic principle, but it works really well. My GP thought I had psychotic depression because he didn't believe it was in my head because I kept telling him how loud and totally distracting it was, he thought I was hearing voices and wouldn't believe me so he put me on Zyprexa which did nothing but made me fat and obnoxious because it didn't stop it. CBT did.

Don't get bogged down in challenging your thoughts either, don't engage in them. You know they're crap so why waste your time. Please don't misinterpret this for other issues that actually need to be spoken about because that might be what's causing this to happen to you. I was in my case.

Stop, challenge, move on. Do it all day everyday as soon as you realise it has crept up on you.

I would get up in the morning, jump in the shower and it had already begun, I call it spin cycle and who want's to hear a washing machine do that at 6am.

I'd be in the shower and before I knew it, it was in full swing, it was screaming at me, you useless f*cking c*nt, what good are you, you're a worthless piece of s*hit, it got worse but I think you catch my drift.

Good luck and PLEASE give it a go.

Peace brother. C

Excuse my ignorance if I'm wrong - but wouldn't an SSRI (especially one that's good for OC) be useful, such as Seroxat? Or what about Clomipramine..??

That wasn't my experience at all, Luvox is the best ssri for OCD and it helped a little with depression but not the intrusive thoughts and Clomipramine did nothing but make me sleepy. That's my personal experience though. I found intensive CBT to be the best thing for me. Even though I have multiple ranging disorders, some don't require meds and some do. In this instance I found CBT to be the best. The clonazepam I mentioned that I'm taking was prescribed for anxiety and RSL. It's also played a major role in mood stability for me, which was quite a welcome surprise. C

This happens to me, chronically. Much of it is replays of bad memories where people said or did something hurtful to me. I can't 'stop' the thoughts; they seem external to me just as if they are attacking me and I have no control.

Sounds like something in the OCD realm. I experience something similar constantly throughout the day, and I've been in CBT for a few years now trying to address it.

....from what people have suggested to you? Have you consulted your pdoc or a psychologist about it, I think a pdoc will just give you meds to shut it off, which is fine for a short term fix, but a psychologist/therapist will talk you through it, and give you the tools to help you shut it off. peace C

Thanks Phillipa.

Linkadge, I have found that techniques similar to these, have benefitted me so much more than meds for this kind of problem.

Other disorders I have suffered from in the past and present need meds, maybe this might too. I hope you speak to someone about it soon because it can get very, very out of hand quite quickly and be quite dangerous. C
