Great comment on Opioids

Posted by Jay_Bravest_Face on November 27, 2008, at 0:24:22

I read this article on the history of opioids. One researcher made a great, funny comment. He said Oxycodone(sp?) makes you feel so good you want to phone the telephone company and tell them what a great job they are doing!

Jay :)

I think the Jewish chemist who developed oxycodone was murdered by the Nazis.

How come that (for example) in Australia....
diamorphine was available OTC in unit doses
Opium was available OTC in much larger doses
Morphine was available OTC (ditto).....
before 1968?

How come??

There was not an unmanageable problem before then.

So we changed?

Actually I use T3's (Tylenol 3's...with codeine)
daily. Nowhere near Oxycodone, but I can easily bump myself out of that "dread" with them. Plus, I take Lyrica, and combining the two makes for a nice gentle sleep. I've been using T3's for about 9 years, not *everyday* straight, and my liver/kidney function is always fine. So, Sig, I can't answer your question...sorry..heh. I'd netter get some sleep....oh...and p.s. I have *never* increased my Tylenol3 dose.

Thanks..
Jay

I think it was on one of those pro-drug recreation websites. I'll have to look in my history.

Well, there are some Rx-happy doctors here in Ontario. These drugs are not really monitored, at least in no way like having to make triplicates of scripts, and send them to the Narc-squad. Just our Pharmacists who may give you a bit of a hard time if you are going through tankloads of this stuff. Okay..now I gotta go to bed...thank you and goooooooooooooooooooooooooooodddddddddniiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight! :-)

Either
we turned into a lot of irresponsible pleasure seekers
or
we got taken over by people with issues relating to control
or
we all turned into nut cases.

Interesting article on mu-opiod receptors and response to anti-depressants..

http://www.psychiatrictimes.com/display/article/10168/1153657?pageNumber=2

Summary
"Substantial evidence in rodents exists to support the role of the µ-opioid system in antidepressant response and the pathophysiology of depressive-like symptoms. In humans, the placebo effect is clearly mediated by the µ-opioid system, which potentially explains a portion of the response seen with many pharmaceuticals. Furthermore, the present data also suggest a role in antidepressant response and tolerance, as well as remission from major depression in humans. The interindividual differences in variations in the OPRM1 gene, and the associations described above, have implications in personalized medicine. One could imagine selecting one antidepressant over another based on genotypic constitution, and predictability of response rate, tolerance to the particular medication. Together this body of literature points to a new direction for research into novel antidepressant treatments and the pathology of MDD."

I have a near full bottle of Percocets..

..in the medicine cabinet. An interesting exercise in self control---the pull is unearthly. I no longer have a toothache--or do I?

Even as a child in the late 1950s I would take the odd aspirin because it was written on the label 'For sleeplessness due to pain' (such touching hope), so the rot must have set in by then.

Than you would become addicted again as you worked so hard to detoxify from them.

I commented elsewhere that opioids were the only med for depression for thousands of years. Yes, depressed people were "addicts", but so what. There's always the lunatic fringe that misuses things, but why that drives policy I don't know.
