I have currently started lamictal at 25 mg and will be slowly titrating up to 100 mg. I've read that lamictal can interfere with the synthesis of folate. Any suggestions as to how much folate would be needed as an adjunct. I have a script for deplin but 7.5 mg of folate might be overkill. Currently not on deplin but trying nac and sometimes sam-e.

Lamictal is a rather modest inhibitor of the enzyme dihydrofolate reductase, which completes the two-step activation of dietary folate into the bioactive form, tetrahydrofolate. I can't find very much evidence that the effect is of clinical significance in humans, although it has been shown to cause serious problems in lab rats.
Deplin would totally bypass the concern, as it is already biologically active, and downstream from the potentially inhibited enzyme. However, because the inhibition of dihydrofolate reductase appears to be incomplete, an oral folate supplement would still boost the yield from that enzyme. I would think that the common folate supps @ e.g. 400 mcg would cover any possible effect of the Lamictal.
A B-12 deficiency would increase the adverse effect potential of the Lamictal, as would a B-6 deficit, so it might be advisable to use a B-complex supp....just to cover all bases.
Regards,
Lar

100mg is a lowish dose of Lamictal. You may need to go up to a higher dose. Try the Deplin it was a HUGE help to me with my Lamictal. The combo of these two is the best AD I have ever taken. And I have been haunting this sight and working with these meds for a very long time. Good luck.

It makes more sense to do it that way, so that you're more aware of the effects of the individual substances. If there is a problem, you'll have a much clearer idea what's causing it.

Hard to say. I had taken Lamictal for years and had a good result at 400mg. But I wanted better. If I took over 400mg of Lamictal I couldn't sleep. When I started Deplin I had to cut my dose of Lamictal below 200. It was very weird, I could watch myself sleep. But the Deplin got rid of a feeling I call emotional agony. Nobody has any idea about how these meds will effect you. Deplin is an augmentation agent. Hence, I would think, it needs something to augment. The thing to consider is that you don't want to move too many pieces of the equation at once or you won't know which med is doing what. Its up to you.

It's great that deplin helped you with Lamictal. Lamictal really helps me for about 4 to 5 hours, then the effect dissipates. It gives me a lot of energy and definitely lifts my mood, but I do still feel what you call "emotional agony". There is still definitely depression going on underneath the boost of energy.
I tried Deplin for a month and it had no effect. How long did it take you to notice an effect?

Wow these meds effect us all so differently. Lamictal gives me no boost. It works over the span of months not hours and it alleviates my depression. The Deplin worked in 48 hours and has never stopped working. Psychoactive meds are just a one hundred percent mystery. They all say somewhere in the fine print, "Mechanism of action is unknown."
