Stimulant+Antipsychotic combo pointless?

Posted by qbsbrown on November 2, 2008, at 13:06:24

I have adhd plus bipolar. I can't function at a job w/o ritalin. That said, it does stimulate racing thoughts and hypomania.

I've also been prescribed Geodon to take after my job is over. I notice that both work on the D2 receptor, but one increasing and the other blocking. Are these meds contradicting e/o?

I can't take an antipsychotic in the morning, or an anticonvulsant, for they make my adhd so bad i can't work.

Thanks for the advice.

Brian

Yes, there is a fairly good potential for stimulants to raise dopamine depending on the strength of them and which ones and potentially counter the effects of the Geodon if you are taking the Geodon for its properties at Dx blockade, such as a psychosis or some other related spectrum.

But if your doctor has prescribed them despite that reason and knows (hopefully from his training) that fact, I don't think there's necessarily anything to be completely concerned about. Why not ask when you next see him/her about this ?

I will ask him just that when I see him in 2 weeks.

Any clues on what it means when I take any antipsychotic, that all of my thoughts become totally internalized, and im just engulfed by them, and antisocial. Any clues?

They can partially offset each other a little bit, but both definitely felt. Just my experience. When I took ritalin with zyprexa, both seemed just as strong as ever, with a little bit of muting going on, but not much. Sure they would seem to counteract each other on paper in theory, but real life is different. The drugs are too complicated, unknown, and mysterious to predict them with our simplistic reasonings.

Naturally antidepressants and antipsychotics give me depression w/ in hours of taking them. Would this most likely be the dopamine factor and the lowering of?

I wonder if adding wellbutrin would prevent this, i think it does.

I'm unable to take an ssri+stimulant, for it causes psychosis. But i would love an ssri for its pro-social qualities (APs make in turn every thought inward, and stop socializing), and natural sleep. But it does induce mania, so i'd need the geodon on board.

I guess my best combo was celexa, zyprexa, and provigil.

I'm out of provigil and celexa, so I'm stuck with the geodon and ritalin until 2 weeks.

I wonder what combo is the best in the long run.

What is the actual diagnosis?

I mean for example, psychotic depression can be managed for someone with Wellbutrin, but that's also just a case history I know.

I was just saying from what I had heard for my personal situation. I think I was projecting a bit -- I was saying it is possible, but not completely likely for everyone.

Hey Jay. The diagnose from the last three PDOCS is BPII.

Cheers,

BPII usually doesn't have psychosis features, but neither does BPI always have any either, I was wondering about the stimulant question, was that yours, I forget -- because stimulants can raise dopamine.

Are you tolerating the Geodon (EPS issues any?)
