vicodin paradoxical response

Posted by llurpsienoodle on October 31, 2008, at 9:38:53

I'm been on vicodin for a couple of days for an abcess in my tooth-jaw. Before the Rx, I was waking up in the middle of the night from pain, despite 10mg of ambien. When I take the vicodin (I can only take it in the evening, because I have to drive a lot during the day) I become drowsy, but later in the evening, I feel pretty revved up, and hypomanic. Of course-- my brain says FUN!!! let's stay up!!!. After a few hours, I must be falling asleep. Then I wake up (to go to work) with drowsy hangover. What a mess.

I'm wondering whether some sleepy-making meds could help me. I've got the following at my disposal

xanax
klonopin
zolpidem (ambien)
sonata
and some antipsychotics-- but they cause BIG hangover!

I'm taking 300mg wellbutrin and 100mg zoloft with 300mg lamictal as my daily meds.

Thanks for your input.

Lurpsie I think you should call the doc. I know for me an opiod makes me feel good and kind of sleepy. So maybe another pain killer would work better. How long you supposed to be on it. Seriously call. Love Phillipa

Have you tried lowering the Vicodin dose or is it too painful then?

Hi there, I'm new but I do have a lot of experience with vicodin. Actually, vicoprofen, same thing, hydrocodone with tylenol, or with advil. I took it on and off for a while after a car accident for headaches. Boy, I really liked that stuff! Never got addicted or anything, but sure didnt mind when I needed a dose!

Sounds like its causing you problems. Here are the offenders that I see for insomnia:

1.Def. hydrocodone. Seems like your sleepy but it actually caused me a lot of insomnia, especially if I took it at night.
2. Wellbutrin caused me lots of insomnia too. Can you take that only in morn, or better yet, skip for a few days?
3. Zoloft can cause insomnia, can you take that in the morn?

Promotes sleep:
1.Klonopin def. helps me with sleep, my pdoc lets me take 2 at night while I'm fighting Parnate insomnia.
2. I think you are taking too many meds to put an antipsychotic into the mix, although seraquel will knock out an elephant from what I've heard.
3. The other thing that has worked REALLY well for me is melatonin. Pdoc said I could take that also for now. I don't usually have it, but bought 3mg bottle and doc said I could take 2 3mg pillsat bedtime. works like a charm, when I take them!
4.xanax I suppose would work, never taken it.
5.Sonota-Insomnia drug, no?
6.Ambien is script only? never taken it.

Sounds as tho you have a pretty good arsenal there, in fact, you really need to call your doc about which are best together, no overdose or hangover! See if you can drop wellbutrin for a couple days, and take vicodin as early as you can with out it effecting driving. IT WILL, so be careful when you take it and good luck!

PS-You may have some stuff there that really shouldnt be mixed. Hydrocodone is a narcotic and taken with a bunch of "downers", get an ok from doc please! If too late make an urgent call or at least, run the list by your pharm.

Good luck, hope you feel better soon!

Jade
