Seroquel vs Geodon

Posted by Maxime on October 26, 2008, at 11:25:43

Hi

I have gained massive amounts of weight from seroquel - 45 pounds. This is really devastating since I have an eating disorder.

I was thinking of switching to Geodon, but I don't know much about the med. It's finally available in Canada.

Does Geodon cause the same sort of weight gain as Seroquel? Do it help depression?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Well I goggled it and came up with weight gain as a side effect and not much help for depression. I do have newsletters from pubmed nursing that may say something more will look later. Phillipa

Thanks Phillipa. I checked RXLIST and weight gain is a side effect but it doesn't seem to be as bad as the others.

Of the atypical antipsychotics, Geodon and Abilify have the lowest risk of weight gain.

Thanks! I know there are risks with the drug ...can affect the heart but it's worth a shot.

I'm doing okay. I just spent a few weeks in the hospital because I stopped my Seroquel. I went psychotic and became suicidal. It's weird to be suicidal and not depressed.

So I am for the most part depression free right which as you can imagine is awesome.

I am on:

60 mg Cymbalta
.5 mg Clonazepam
200 mg Seroquel
300 mg Wellbutrin SR

Maxime it's amazing that all those drug trials with all the restrictions didn't work but cymbalta does.So many lately it seems have stopped the other ones and are now on lesser ones. Wonder what it means? Phillipa

I have been on tried both seroquel and geodon. Seroguel did nothing for my anxiety, I did not notice weight gain but I did notice hair loss.

Geodon I felt good on but it lower my blood pressure so low that I would feel like I was ready to faint. My pdoc took me off that fast, didn't want me fainting while driving he said.

I liked Geodon better, wished it worked for me.

Geodon didn't work for me. I started hearing voices when I was taking it. It also made my vision blurry. I didn't sleep as well on it. I got diabeties on geodon. Didn't gain much weight, 10 lbs. I took it for 2 years.

I've never tried seroquel.

I take zyprexa now! and perphenazine.

I don't know what to do. I don't know how much I would need to be on. My psychiatrist is in 80s and not aware of newer drugs so I will be educating him. Just wish I knew more.

I got a prescription for the Zeldox (Geodon). The pharmacy has to order it so I won't get to try today.

I really hope it helps me the Seroquel does.

I started the Geodon today. I am taking 20mg twice a day. My stomach is a little upset after the first dose, but other than that no weird side effects. I hope 40 mg will be enough for me ... guess I will find out.

Any Geodon experiences are welcome!
