Are there any meds that DO NOT make you gain weight??? Other than the stimulants and wellbutrin...I hate gaining weight from meds! I'd rather do it the old-fashioned way - by eating too many hot fudge sundaes ;-)

Lamictal is weight-neutral. In addition, 2 anti-convulsants sometimes used off-label for mood stabilization are associated with weight loss. These are Topamax (topiramate) and Zonegran (zonisamide).

I have seen some mention of using metformin to help with weight gain from psych meds. Has anyone heard any more about this? Is anyone actually prescribing it for that reason?

Which psych meds are you taking that have caused weight gain?

I have been on bupropion and lamotrigine for quite a while and my weight has been constant for the past couple of years (I'm in my 50's). I usually control FMS just with regular exercise and fitness but this latest flare-up has been bad enough to have me searching for drugs effective against sleeplessness and FM pain, which makes it hard to exercise as I need to do. Have tried amitriptyline, cyclobenzaprine, and gabapentin in varying combinations. Have gained 7 pounds in 3 months! I wasn't overweight before but am now, and I'm not happy about it :-(
My daughter put on almost 30 lbs with SSRIs and is struggling to take it off. It's a rough business, this weight gain problem.

For a discussion of weight gain in bipolar treatment,
http://www.psycheducation.org/hormones/Insulin/weightgain.htmScroll to the bottom for a discussion of Metformin. The conclusion is "Though metformin still seems to make sense in theory, in practice trying to use it to treat or prevent weight gain has not been very successful. It doesn't work miracles, that much is clear. It might help some."

I also find that I can't keep weight off without exercise. Especially after the Big Five-O.

Parnate is an MAOI, right? Was that 30 lbs you felt happy to see go or did that loss make you underweight?

My pdoc has mentioned that there have been a couple of studies on chromium picolinate for mitigation of med-induced weight gain. I don't have links, but it would probably be possible to find information by googling.

I take zyprexa and metformin.
The metformin is to reduce blood sugar increases from the zyprexa. The metformin also helps keep the weight down, especialy when I'm active. I was losing weight when I had the job as pizza delivery. When I left the job I didn't have any problem keeping the weight the same. I've gained a few pounds this last while just sitting on the couch. I'm starting to lose it now. Eating less and more active.
The metformin realy does seem to help. My theory is that I burn more calories when my sugars are low enough. You burn calories when you have the insulin to make your muciles burn the sugars.
Check your sugars and see if you could use metformin. If they are high, metformin would be good!
I take 15mg zyprexa.
