Can you OD on citalopram (celexa)? I had thought for a long time that you couldn't b/c it's an SSRI, but then I found a website where it said that you can start to have heart problems, etc. with an OD xxx xxxxx - which is only xxx xxxx.
Does anybody know anything else about this?

Rose garden,
I have been taught it is possible to overdose on any SSRI's, specially if xxxx and/or xxxxxx are involved.
This is what I found from another website:
In studies, very high doses of Celexa (xxxxxx) did not cause loss of life. However, loss of life is more likely to occur if the drug is taken with xxxxxxxxxxxxxx.
Are you okay?

If celexa isn't working / if you feel suicidal go to a hospital ASAP. ODing on celexa would probably just leave you alive and brain dammaged.
Have you tried any other medications?

I don't think I'll do anything...Just nice to know it's there, i guess. I was just thinking about it a lot today.
I've been feeling weird lately...I decided that if i don't feel better by Nov. 16, then i'll try to go back to therapy.

Hi no rose garden,
I am very sorry you have been feeling so badly. Please stay safe and *please* seek real life help if you are thinking of acting on suicidal thoughts.
>but then I found a website where it said that you can start to have heart problems, etc. with an OD xxx xxxxx - which is only xxx xxxx.
It's absolutely fine to discuss suicidal thoughts or feelings here, but I do need to ask you to please follow site guidelines by not posting how much it takes to overdose.
From the FAQ:
"Please don't use this site to exchange information that could be used to harm yourself or others. Information that could be used to harm oneself includes both how much it takes to overdose and how one can find out how much it takes to overdose."
If you or others have questions about this or about posting policies in general, please see the FAQ: http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/faq.html#civil
Follow-ups regarding these issues should be directed to Psycho-Babble Admin and should of course be civil. Dr. Bob has oversight over deputy decisions, and he may choose a different action.
Thanks...

Hi Morgan,It's great to support and help other posters here, but please follow site guidelines by not posting how much it takes to overdose.

I've taken very high doses of Celexa, never ODed. 80mg was highest. Took that for a few weeks. Most of the time I was on 60mg, for a number of years.

I hadn't known that was also in there. Yes it makes sense to not post exact numbers.
On the other hand, I've posted what I think is important information to people, always saying a caveat and clearly not stating this is for any other reason other than their health, etc -- don't combine many CNS depressants (e.g. alcohol, kava, etc.) because that can cause a coma if not worse.
That I think is valid information, since sometimes insomniacs (me included) add multiple things including OTC agents to their doses, and that's not a good thing if you don't ask your doctor.
That releases no specifics, no LD50s, none of the above, which by the way are often publicly available in PIs and on the net and can't be avoided. I'm not going to go about obviously and point out a URL.
I don't think this should be a forum for suicide, obviously, but I think its important to discuss it in an abstract form at least so people can vent and get their feelings heard.
Also it helps to note that it is important to discuss these things with your psychiatrist -- it seems scary and against what you would want to reveal, but the law (at least in this state, I think its a federal one, I'm not sure) only provides that your psychiatrist or psychologist has to suddenly refer you to a PET team and a hospital if you have an actual plan rather than feeling very depressed and should be discussing these things.
I think they'd rather know what their patients are feeling. At least the caring therapists I know of.
Anyhow enough morbid comments for one posting but I can tell you its a natural part of major depression and thoughts go through my mind every day because of just what a panoply of symptoms I have going on and not having acceptance yet that this is who I am, at least for now.Anyhow, that is my own inner feelings -- this was about someone else who I think should discuss with someone they're comfortable with.
-- best wishes
Jay

Every poster doesn't know all of what is in the FAQs regarding Dr. Bob's guidelines.
We hope our requests are seen as just that - educational - and that it might encourage people to read over the FAQ.
We all do things "without thinking" - I know I sure do! But in this case, I figured you just might not have been aware.
This is the end of the thread.
