Anxiety on Trazodone

Posted by Maria3667 on October 9, 2008, at 3:36:32

Hi guys,

Besides taking Seroquel for anxiety, I'm also on 150 mg of Trazodone for depression. Now it's five weeks later and I get the feeling I'm becomming more anxious again.

Has anyone else experienced anxiety on Trazodone? I thought it was supposed to relieve anxiety?

Maria

Hi Azalea,

Depending on how I feel, most days 450 mg (3x 150) and sometimes 600 (2x 150 plus 1x 300).

That's a pretty high dose for anxiety. What's your diagnosis if I might ask? Phillipa

theoretically trazodone should lower anxiety but as we know, everybody is somehow different. what trazodone can do also is inducing very, very strange thoughts. that's the point when you should talk with your doctor.

Hi Phillipa,

If my memory serves me right: PTSD, dysthymia, PPD (paranoid personality disorder), social fobia and GAD... It's a wonder I can still find my two feet !

I don't think the dose of Seroquel is very high; I've come down from 900 mgs daily, so...

Thanks for trying to help me out.

Maria

Neither Seroquel nor Trazodone should increase anxiety. Both medications have anti-anxiety properties. Perhaps something in your environment rather than your medication is causing the anxiety.

Anxiety on Traz and Seroquel? That just shouldn't be happening. I'd get right into my doctor because it's likely to be something other than those meds.

Hi Greywolf,

So true it could be something else.
I also have an auto-immune disorder (Sjogren's syndrome)which can have anxiety as a side effect. There is no cure. On the other hand I have several personality disorders, so it's difficult telling which is the cause...

However, Seroquel does quench the anxiety somewhat, but only if I take it in a very high dosage (900 mgs per day) in combination with Ativan (up to 10/day). Over the years my body has become resistant to 'surpressing drugs'. Also the side effects like weightgain and severe constipation, I find unbearable. Not to mention libido loss. Trazodone does seem to relieve the latter a little, so that at least 1 positive thing!

Thanks for listening.

You are not the first person to report increased anxiety on trazodone, seroquel, remeron, zyprexa, or any other med known to decrease anxiety. I even remember someone getting wired on xanax.

There is no way to get inside the brain and see what exactly the problem is, or how a particular drug is interplaying with that problem. You just have to go by what it feels like. It is frustrating, but we will never know for sure why we reacted a certain way to this or that med.

As has been mentioned, maybe something else is wrong. But still, for the med to trigger it and make it worse is not cool.

I don't know about anxiety, but Trazodone can have an idiosyncratic reaction for some people. I had it at one point where my pulse exceeded 150 after I had taken it for sleep (50-150mg really is a sleep dose for most, a full adult dose of Trazodone would put most people to sleep as I think it goes up to 600mg).

And there's also the issue of mCPP, one of the main metabolites of Trazodone which can cause psychosis and probably other feelings, so that is something to be watched too. Again, not everyone gets that reaction.

As for Seroquel, I'm only speaking from my own experience since I'm sensitive to medications, is that the lowest dose is always the best. Around 200-400mg is conservative. Yes, some people need the full 800mg or more, but the MED (minimum effective dose is best). Also consistency is usually a good thing, not just jumping from 400 to 600 in the space of a few days, it can cause unwanted side effects.

-- best wishes

Jay
