Heard that ultram was very good for depression or anxiety especially anxiety and many gave up benzos for a go of it. I know it's a pain med but pain is sometimes a component of anxiety or depression. Phillipa

Hi Phillipa,
Ultram, that's Tramadol I guess. After years of thinking the Germans could never produce a good A.D. I've had to revise my opinion, this is a first class drug ( though it's primary use is as a painkiller). If you've been on benzo's for a long time it's unlikely to help much at first and could even be dangerous as it lowers the seizure threshold, so be careful. The upside to Tramadol is that it can be taken "as needed" the effects are immediate and quite pleasant. It's supposed to be structurally similar to Venlafaxine ( Effexor) but for me it's a safer drug, less likely to induce the nasty and prolonged withdrawals associated with Venlaf. I fear one day they might try and get this easily available drug ( Tramadol)
scheduled. It's too good !Take care.

apparently some shrinks have been using tramadol for OCD. I don't see why it isn't more popular; I mean, it isn't a controlled substance, it clearly has antidepressant qualities, and its off-patent so its cheaper than many other medications.
I bet if they made a once-daily "Ultram XR," charged lots of $$$ for it, and got an FDA approval for depression/anxiety/whatever, shrinks would rx it like crazy and pat themselves on the back for embracing an "innovative approach" to mental illness.B!tching aside: Ultram can be pretty awesome, although I hear tapering can be rough (like an Effexor taper+opiate taper...all in one).

I'd be wary of Ultram. I've taken it many, many times in the past for pain and it does give you a sense of euphoria... much like taking a narcotic like percocet (which I love !!) but it also (I feel) is very addictive and can make you feel totally hung over and depressed the next day. Perhaps you can take it in smaller doses and be okay with it. I just wonder if it can be taken long term without becoming addicted. I felt like I couldn't drive on it either.
Any way....good luck!!! If it's right for you then wonderful. Just wanted to throw my two cents in.

Tramadol feels great the first few doses then is very inconsistant and can give you stomach problems. After just a week on it I had a day of hell stopping it as far as withdrawal.

I'm thinking that's probably a good choice.
I've only known of two folks who went the opioid or opioid-like route when it was a rumble several years ago. There were reports of a rapid wonderful relief start for a few weeks, dodgey in the middle and difficult ending it when ending was the thing to do due to issues - despite some reports to the contrary. I'm unsure if prehaps there isn't a difference when used as psych treatment versus straight pain control treatment.
Some may be able to go that route successfully to solely treat emotional concerns but I think it takes a hard think and attentive followup so as to avoid problems and not end up with another issue to deal with. There is sometimes wisdom in: "If it appears too good to be true..."
This is the end of the thread.
