I am currently taking Nardil (45mg), Seroquel (50-25mg) and Klonopin (2-3mg) for anxiety/depression. My pdoc is thinking about adding Lamictal to my medical combo because my pdoc thinks I may have some "components of Bipolar II."
I have searched the Dr. Bob archives and found very few if any people who have been on Lamictal for a lengthy time and share their experiences on it. How long did it take to kick in? How did it make you feel different? Any side effects?
Thanks in advance, Michael

Just the excessive salivation constant spitting and some anger. That was on 50mg. Love Phillipa

Limactal worked well for me as an additive. But I have tried to get off it twice now and have had a hard time. Even going down 25 mg and my mood tumbles.

Hi Michael,
Lamictal has really saved my life. I'm bp1. I used to have a kind of anxious depression--I was kind of nervous and depressed at the same time. I felt really bad that my life was not great and at one point I even took on overdose. After the overdose I was put on lamictal. I am no longer depressed about my life and function very well. My family says that I'm the best I've been in years and I think the lamictal really has been helping. I take 400. For me one side effect was that I experienced very severe insomnia. Kind of being half asleep and half awake. I take an antipsychotic that induces sleep (zyprexa) and that balances out the lamictal.
Overall I feel pretty good on it but sometimes I wonder if I'm a little disconnected or not motivated enough. I'm not sure if that's from the medicine or my condition (could be a little schizoaffective too) I have the sense that I would really hate my life (but also experience a lot more emotions) if I were taking less or not taking it. I have tried to go off it or taper down and I always become really stressed out and upset...So I guess that means it's working.
Did you know it just went generic? Isn't that great? That's a huge savings for me.
I think it kicked in pretty quickly. It seemed to make a difference and make my mood brighter even when taking small amounts. But I don't remember the specifics.
Hope lamictal works for you if you end up taking it! Good Luck!

I've been taking Lamictal for about 5 years at 50mg per day. Anti-depressant effect kicks in after about 3 hours and then dies down after about 6 hours. It has been great and the only thing that has worked for my unipolar depression. Unfortunately my mood sinks after about 8 hours and even if I take another dose it doesn't seem to help. So basically I have short window every day when I'm pretty functional. The rest of the time it's a struggle.

Hi, I took lamictal for about 4 years. It seemed to help my suicidal ideation moods, and my ultra rapid bipolar some, but I was on 25 mg. Worked soon. Gave me anger I think, and after the 4 years or so, I had a bad experience with it making me very sick physically(slurring speech, muscle control problems, skin sensitivity lots of problems,) so I had to stop it. Not trying to scare you, as lots are fine with it, just telling my experience. Before it gave me problems, I had very few side effects from it and liked it.
