Constant rumination-BAD

Posted by Justherself54 on July 26, 2008, at 22:44:53

I don`t know what is happening. I just increased my parante to 40 mgs a few days ago, and the racing thoughts and rumination are driving me up the wall..if I get upset with someone I have about 20 different versions of arguments in my head..what I should have said, what I didnt say, it is exausting me..the only relief I get is when I go to sleep. I`ve always been prone to rumination but this is awful..I can`t stop it..even when I try to play extreme concentration games on the computer or try to occupy myself with a task..it won`t stop!

Any advise on why this is happening would be greatly appreciated!

Did you just increase your dose? If so could that be it? Just a thought and I feel horrible for you. Know that I am thinking of you. Love Phillipa

parante? Do you mean Parnate? Switch to Nardil or sumplement it with a sedative.

Sorry, yes I meant Parnate...I had a failed trial on Nardil so that's not an option. I did take a bit of clonazapam this afternoon and it seemed to help.

I'm just wondering if this is a side effect of the increase that hopefully is temporary?

A possibility: sometimes people get hypomania (sometimes with mixed features) as a side effect of antidepressants. You don't have to be bipolar for this to happen. Or it may be a stimulant-like side effect. Parnate can have stimulant type effects for some people. If you look at the chemical structure, it bears more than a passing resemblance to amphetamine.

I know how awful the rumination thing can be. How much do you feel the clonazepam is helping? I'd call my doc if I were in your shoes, and make it clear how serious your situation is.

Thanks Crotale..I am bipolar..usually with starting a med and sometimes increasing I get the energetic, on top of the world type hypomania. I wondered if I was doing some sort or weird cycling. The clonazapam did help. If it persists, I'll put a call into my pdoc. Thanks so much..

You say usually starting with a med...do you only become hypomanic on meds, or sometimes spontaneously, without, err, help? If it's only on meds, that isn't necessarily bipolar, although you may need a mood stabilizer of some sort if antidepressants always cause you to switch or cycle. Clonazepam has some stabilizing effects, but anticonvulsants are more usual choices. Definitely talk to your doctor about it...when's your next appointment?

Take care,

I've had hypomanic episodes without meds, but one major one went on for an extended time (looong) and the resultant crash was devasting. It was after this that I was diagnosed. Before, I would only seek help in the depressive phase, so it took almost 20 years for it to be diagnosed properly..I still hold resentment to that pdoc whom I trusted who treated me for that long and never caught on (I'm now with one who knows his stuff).

We'll see how tomorrow is..I'll give him a call if it starts all over again.

You sound a lot like me, only I didn't know I was bipolar when I started on Nardil.

Without doubt, it put me into a permanent hypomanic state.

Have you tried a mood stabilizer? AFAIK, the standard of care for bipolar patients is to get them on a mood stabilizer first. I'm still in the titration period with Lamictal and I don't know how much good it's doing, but at least the side effects are minimal.

SSRI's were horrible for me at higher dosages.

Blue how long did it take, and at what dose, did you get into a perm. hypomanic state on Nardil? I'm just starting a trial of nardil after no success with many S/NRIs, although Effexor put me into a slight hypomania, that was more of a 'blissed out', apathetic, uncaring state.

Emsam worked great for motivation, and apathy and romantic desire, but caused increadible anxiety and made me feel 'too smart' (believe i have posted about this before).

While I am a bit worried about nardil hypomania, honestly, i'm also trying to get to that edge, since that' sthe only time i feel decent about myself, motivated, and driven. So I'm hoping nardil can get me there and put me there 'permanently' so to speak.

Why did you eventually stop Nardil? Was yours a true hypomania, or just, well, uncofmrotable a/d success? What dose and how long, and finally last question, was this hypomania qualitatively different than any hypomanic experience you've had (if any) on S/NRIs?

Thanks much
