Edronax not working vs Paxil withdrawals?

Posted by DarkPriestess on June 5, 2008, at 6:05:34

Hi all,

I started taking Edronax (Reboxetine) about 7 weeks ago. It worked pretty well for the first 4 weeks until I decided to stop taking Aropax (Paxil). I did step down off the aropax gradually but wow....dropping from 10mg to nothing was insane! Massive depression, constant teariness and pure rage at everyone and everything (not to mention the physical symptoms).
Its been three weeks since I've come off aropax and all the withdrawal symptoms seem to have disappeared, with the exception of the depression and sucidal ideation-if anything, they're actually getting worse. My question is: are the depression and suicidal thoughts still being caused by the aropax withdrawal or has edronax simply stopped working for me? My doc has increased my dose to 8mg a day as of tonight, so I'm waiting to see if that has any effect. Any thoughts? Sorry for such a rambling post!

For some people, withdrawal from paroxetine can be severe and prolonged, and some symptoms of it may last up to a few months. In other words, withdrawal may still be playing a role, but another issue may be the low dose reboxetine, and your increase to 8 mg may prove effective - up to 12 mg can be taken if necessary. Tryptophan or 5-HTP supplements may mitigate Paxil witdrawals.

It could be a bit of both. SSRI withdrawl can cause a noradrenergic rebound. Taking reboxetine may amplify those effects. The reboxetine may also amplify rage from paxil withdawl.

I agree with the 5-htp suggestion. It shouldn't interact with the reboxetine. Some doctors also prescribe fluoxetine (prozac) to reduce paxil withdrawl. It may sound a little counterintuitive, but paxil has a short half life and prozac has a long half life. As such fluoxetine generally produces fewer withdrawl symtpoms.

Can you go back on say 5mg of paxil for a while?

Thanks for the quick responses guys!

I'm not keen on going back on paxil again I must say, even in small doses, so I've ordered some 5-htp online and I should be getting that in a few days. I'll let you know it goes!

Thanks again for the helpful tips :)
