50mg of Seroquel effect...

Posted by Sheilac on May 12, 2008, at 13:56:48

If I sleep well and feel well on just 50mg of Seroquel will it make me fat in the long run? It seems like a low enough dose and I don't feel hungry on it, but I hear that it might effect metabolism.

It seems like one of the only meds (along with xanax) that seem to work really well for me.

It would be nice to get a little more of an AD boost.

Hi there

I've been taking 50mg Seroquel at night along with 2mg clonazepam for about 6 years now. The Seroquel has always made me eat rubbish at night at did put some extra weight on me. Though not near as bad as Olazapine, very fat indeed! haha.

I would say if it isn't effecting your appetite then there shouldn't be a real reason that you will gain any weight.

Hope that helps :O)

I don't think it effects the metabolism ... I think it makes you crave carbs ... which you aren't, so all is fine. :)

As long as you're not eating more on it i wouldn't worry about it.

Hello Sheilac,

I am on Elavil in the evening, but I'm thinking about switching to Seroquel for sleep.
I would appreciate if you will answer a few questions.
How long does it take for you to get to sleep after taking the pill?
Which are the side-effects?
Do you take any other drugs?
Can you drink alcohol?

Keep smiling,
X-ray

Hello,

I take Seroquel for sleep. Either 50mg or 100mg depending on how much I feel I need. It takes about an hour to kick in and then it puts me right out. I haven't experienced many noticable side-effects. Perhaps some food cravings late and slight restless leg but unlike restless leg I've had in the past (non-drug related) I get right to sleep as soon as I lay down. So it's probably not really restless leg syndrome or anything just a physical sensation that lets me know it's kicked in and I can sleep....

No one is going to tell you it's OK to drink on it (or any med really) but I do. I drink beer during happy hour and I've never had a problem. It's probably not so good for the liver but as far as psychological effects go I haven't noticed one interacting with the other. No increased hangovers/mania/depression/etc.....your mileage may vary :)

Good luck!

-Jay

HI - I can usually fall asleep within 30-60 min after taking it. The only other meds I take are xanax and allergy/ashthma meds. And I do drink a few times a week.

I don't have any side effects from it accept that maybe I'm a little drowsy in the morning, but well rested. I usually have a few cups of coffee and I'm good to go.

Seroquel also has really helped with anxiety.

Hello johnj,

I take 50 mg Elavil in the evening.
It's a very good drug for sleep.

If I go to bed early in the evening, I will probably wake up in the middle of the night.

But if I have worked hard and go to bed late, I will sleep till morning.

Elavil is also good for anxiety.

From AnxietyConnection.com:
Elavil is used to treat mental/mood problems such as depression. It may help improve mood and feelings of well-being, relieve anxiety and tension, help you sleep better, and increase your energy level.

Hi,
I've just come off Seroquel 400mg...I didn't have so much as side effects but I have put on an enormous amount of weight since it was increased to that dosage....at first it took about an hour for me to fall asleep and once I was asleep I was out until the morning, and some mornings I felt like right poo when I woke up. It didn't affect my eating much however I did crave more chocolate and sugary things, I honestly think it's induced Diabetes although Diabetes runs in my family so this may be part of it.

Kind of a bad idea just stopping them as I'm now having really bad withdrawals, but I'm going to see my psychiatrist next week to get it sorted.

has anyone got any suggestions on other possible meds to replace Seroquel? I'm also on Lamictal 200mg

My last diagnosis[which was a year ago] was Cyclothymic Disorder however this was before I was given Seroquel so not sure if that diagnosis still stands...another thing I need to sort with the Psychiatrist.

I need something to help me sleep - but not knock me out as I have severe panic attacks, was once given Zopiclone and it terrified me as it knocked me out within 5mins of taking it and I would out for nearly 16 hours...

I would appreciate any help

Hello TatterdandTorn,

Trazodone is the official antidepressant of Sleepy-bye Land (crazymeds.us).

Best of Luck,

Hey X-ray, thanks for your reply...what kind of AD is it? as I am super-sensitive to most meds I have been on....I was taken off AD's and that's when I was given the Seroquel...AD's I've been on and taken off are:
-Mirtazipine
-Effexor
-Citalopram
-Escitalopram
-Manerix
-Cymbalta
They've all had the dosages increased and the Mirtazipine, Citalopram, Escitalopram and Manerix have been tried several times..... to no avail, Mirtazipine knocked me out cold, and Manerix gave me severe headaches, sickness and general feeling like crap plus I had an issue with the food/other medication interaction.
Citalopram and Escitalopram just didn't work....
The only ones which weren't increased in dosage were Effexor and Cymbalta - Never wanna experience side effects like those again, thought I was going to die...

As far as I'm aware they won't give me tricylics due to my suicidal past and self harm[still classed as high risk]

also I'm in the UK so is that available here?

Thanks again
xx

Hello TatteredandTorn,

Trazodone is an "atypical antidepressant".
Brand name in the UK: Molipaxin.

This drug is definitely a very good sleep aid.
But it might "knock you out cold".

I have unfortunately no knowledge which drug you need for your "cyclothymic disorder".

My problem is that I can't sleep without medicine.
I have tried a lot of drugs, but for most of the time I have been on Elavil.

Elavil gives me a good night's sleep, but it's a dirty drug.
So I have been on the lookout for another drug as a sleep aid for many years.

Mirtazapine, Trazodone or a low dose of Seroquel are options which I will discuss with my psychiatrist on my next visit.

Best of Luck,
X-ray

Well I need to discuss with my Psychiatrist as I am am unsure that 'Cyclothymic Disorder' is the right diagnosis for me....

Don't want anything that will knock me out cold though...Mirtazipine did that with me the first time I was given it although it was short lived...Second time round I'd had one too many experiences of being 'knocked out' by meds so I took it once and never took it again.

Seroquel has helped me sleep - and stay asleep - however it has a small problem of making you sleep till next week - I could sleep and sleep and sleep....And weight gain has been a massive issue with me. I started on 50mg, then was increased to 400mg over 4 weeks....think for your situation though 50mg or even 100mg might do the trick!

I was given Zopiclone years ago when I was first diagnosed with Insomnia, however I was told at the time that it is usually only administered in Hospital and rarely given in out-patients, also not sure if it is available in the US, but it might be worth mentioning. Only problem I had with that was it did knock me out....for around 12 hours or something.....

Take Care =]
