So DONE with Seroquel

Posted by Maxime on May 8, 2008, at 22:17:11

Tired of the weight gain and carb cravings ... I am off 200 mg of Seroquel. I haven't slept in three nights and I am a nervous mess, but I won't go back on it ... no way.

Sometimes, meds just plain suck with their side effects.

This concerns me as Seroquel seems to be helping you more than anything else you have tried recently.

Hi Maxime,

I totally agree with you about Seroquel. I was on it briefly - very briefly. It made me eat everything in sight and since I'm a recovering bulimic, I would then throw up. Overnight it brought me out of recovery and into full blown bulimia.

Can't you find something else to help you sleep? Trazadone works well for me. And Geodon helps me with sleep and anxiety and depression. Be warned, though, it has a tendency to poop out. But the first five months I was on it I felt so good I believe I was slightly hypomanic. Or maybe it was just that it removed my depression and anxiety almost overnight.

It might be worth a try...

Marsha

I think Abilify might be less likely to poop-out.

The Cymbalta and Wellbutrin are helping me. Yes, the Seroquel was helping me. But I have been cutting too much as a result of the weight gain.

It's not available in Canada yet.

Hi Marsha

I am 25 pounds heavier than I was in October ... and I am short too, so that is a HUGE amount of weight.

I stopped the Seroquel a few days a ago and I have already lost some edema.

I was taking it for depression, anxiety and transient psychosis so I hope I don't crash if I am not on it.

F*ck, not even Geodon is available here .. my options suck!

What about Stelazine? It is weight neutral or produces weight loss and is known to help some people with depression. I would have to check whether or not it increases prolactin. I guess so. Lactation is listed as an infrequent side effect.

Oh, well. Let me check...

... Maybe it would be worth a quick trial. Stelazine tends to be activating. EPS is a rare occurrence at dosages under 6mg., and lactation is not as much of a problem as it is with other antipsychotics. In fact, at low concentrations, it suppresses the secretion of prolactin. Unfortunately, the study I saw did not give a human dosage equivalent for this inhibitory concentration. Nevertheless, it is an interesting drug.

I think ziprasidone (Geodon) is available as Zeldox in Canada.

The old antipsychotics (eg. haloperidol and chlorpromazine) are less likely to cause weight gain. The same is true for sulpiride and amisulpride, but I know they aren't available in Canada. What about pimozide?

THANK YOU! So it is! I was misinformed. :)

I love chlorpromazine but it makes me lactate even on low doses.

I am going to see how I do without the Seroquel, but would like to try Geodon if I encounter problems.

What side effects did you get from Geodon, if any? And what dosage did you start on and then finish on? I see that it can cause bipolar mania (odd for an anti-psychotic), so quite possibly you were manic!

It might help. Although I see that lactation is a possible side effect ... which mean I will most likely lactate .. but you never know.

Going to see how I do without the Seroquel. My anxiety is high now without it.

Well, the carb cravings have gone and I have already lost a couple of pounds. But my anxiety is increasing daily and I am barely sleeping.

Maybe I will try Geodon, but am worried it will make more anxious. Guess there is only one way to find out!
