Dothiepin, melitracen and imipramine. Dothiepin and melitcracen helped an awful lot, but I couldn't get up to the therapeutic dose with imipramine so I don't know about that one. Melitracen was in a compound preperation with flupentixol, so I don't know how effective it would have been on its own.

Did you use it for depression or anxiety? I need it for anxiety but worry about agitation when starting. Can't take benzos and I have been through the ssris'(terrible anxiety) and remeron (increased anxiety too). I was hoping maybe a small dose tca would take the edge off and help with sleep. Thank you.

I took them for mixed depression and anxiety. Dothiepin was the most effective for anxiety. I remember being very anxious and upset during the day before I took it. It helped me sleep and I felt much less anxious the next day.

That will pass, why didn't you try it longer? It may have been the one. You really need to give meds a longer trial and not ditch them so quickly.

No, I don't think it is. Desipramine might be the closest thing to it though.

I took 10mg Nortriptyline for about 2 weeks. The first night was kind of over stimulated and tossing and turning broken sleep and waking feeling more anxious. But from day 2 onward it was very calming and sleep was solid. I am sensitive to many things and had a physical allergic reaction to it, among a list of many meds and herbs. But while on it, beginning day 2 and 3, I found Nortriptyline very good for anxiety. I imagine its parent Amitriptyline would be even better, though with stronger side effects.

Too much stuff to do can't afford to be in bed. And can't afford weight gain. Riding my bike so far is the best ad for me. Phillipa

Phillipa,
How do you know if you only took it for one day? You need to listen to what I meant. The sedating effect usually doesn't last forever as your body adjusts but you already knew this.

What kind of allergic reaction? I am sorry to hear that. I was told by my counselor yesterday that he thinks I have a low grade, in the background depression that complicates things. I have mostly bad anxiety/ocd type stuff. I have to agree.
The other interesting thing we talked about was how sensitive I became after my pneumonia. He said maybe all I needed at that time was a reduction in my meds, one of which was pamelor. I was at 50 mg and after being sick it made me feel like I was on 100 mg (which was terrible for me). I remember now I used to think I had all of these side effects returning. So, maybe I need a small dose now? That and stay off of benzos which cause a paradoxial effect in me now. I HOPE this is correct and if I could get a consistent amount of sleep I could start to function better. I did sleep about 7.5 hours last night and got back to sleep after having about 20 minutes of anxiety in the middle of the night. Take that away and I probably sleep longer and better.

My pdoc has suggested Imipramine for depression and anxiety. Any opinions on Imipramine?

Hi Karen:
I am glad your doc suggested a tca as many won't even go there. I tried imipramine a few years ago while still on a high dose of nortryptiline, lithium and a benzo. I started a low dose and when I went up to 20 mg I had some jitterness. I stopped taking it but I regret not giving it a fair trial. I should have waited a two weeks to see if it abated. I think I will go with a very low dose of anything to start as my body has changed. Keep us posted on how it works if you go for it.
