Ever since I started my very low combo of depakote and lithium, I have noticed two bad side effects. One is decreased libido, and second is that I feel very tense, quick tempered. Are either of these a common side effect on either of these drugs?
Thanks so much!

I've been on lithium and depakote but not at the same time. If this were a multiple choice quiz and I had to take my best shot, I would place my bets on lithium as the culprit. Lithium to me caused a good deal of tenseness, wired feeling, almost like too much coffee, and it is also intertwined in the serotonin circuitry which could explain the sex stuff.
Depakote could of course be guilty, but I don't recall anything vaguely similar to what you are describing from depakote. I was on 500mg and then 1000mg. At first it was kind of warming and slightly calming, but after a few weeks it was completely invisible. Lithium on the other hand was loud.
But that's just my experience. You know how mileage varies.

Hi, did you start both of them on the same day? Roslynn

Had a very bipolar father in law and lithium calmed him down in about a week coming off high mania. Even his Son first husband of mine was on it for a week and I couldn't believe how nice he was and so calm. Now that is observation only. Good luck to you. Phillipa

Thanks, I actually started them both the same day. Since the combo really is doing nothing noticeably positive, I think I'll just cut them both out. It really wasn't even being used as treatment for bipolarity, just mild mood instability and impulsiveness caused by a moderately high dosage of clonopin.
Thanks
