Can you pass the acid test? (MSLT)

Posted by Molybdenum on April 21, 2008, at 19:33:36

Hi,

I've decided to write a book of short stories. You've maybe seen some of them already posted here. Here's one I'm working on but I would much appreciate help with the main character. Help which I am sure a few of you would be expert at providing, should you feel so kind:

OK - lets suppose you live somewhere where modafinil is very expensive. You could afford it - barely, but you'd have to eat leaves & live in a cardboard box under a bridge - and you think that would taint the experience.

You can get it almost for free if you very appear narcoleptic though on an MSLT test. I mean, a MSLT with a mean sleep latency <= 8 mins and at least 2 (REM) periods. Not that easy to do when you're not narcoleptic.

So what should my character take to pull this off do you think? He has melatonin, zolpidem, clonazepam, alprazolam and even dextropropoxyphene by the bucket load. He also has a ton of mirtazapine which he's built up quite tolerance to. Hence it can't be relied upon to knock him out.

He suspects he'll have to provide some urine after the test, so he's planned on collecting some from the day beforehand which would be relatively untainted. He'll keep it nice & warm of course.

So what would you recommend my character take on the morning of the test to ensure the MSLT is less than 8 mins AND he dreams.....?

I know many of you have the secrets of the ancients, so please part with this knowledge for the sake of a possible literary masterpiece...!

Thanks ;)

M.

Being someone who scored in the severe range on the sleep latency test without the use of all that stuff, I am not sure I have much to offer. But, if I were writing a book, I might have the character explore some self hypnosis techniques to help him enter sleep as quickly as possible. I am not actually narcoleptic as much as I have trouble regulating my arousal level and suffer from ADD inattentive type.
For research purposes you might want to go through the procedure yourself since the whole wire sticking process is different for the night before test than for th daytime one and you need both. Also, for authenticity sake..IMHO almost all sleep labs lead to an apnea or airway obstruction diagnosis as a "rule-out- before narcolepsy is diagnosed...so be prepared for a cpap machine recommendation.

Thanks ncrainbow,

My errr....character has severe central sleep apnoea confirmed by several previous overnight studies. CPAP makes it worse, so "s/he's" doing the overnight again just to get a new baseline 'cos its been a few years & who knows how her AD meds, etc may be affecting matters.

The MSLT the next day is really her one stab at getting the modafinil she needs at a price she can afford. So I'm wondering if a ton of melatonin would do the trick to get her MSLT to less than 8 mins and yet still allow her to dream? I'm afraid (for her) that the benzos might kill the REM, which would render her an effective "fail".

.....my characters become "so real" for me, it's hard to type when I feel her pain so deeply...*cough*.....

I do think the lucid dreaming or meditation techniques might be helpful. C

Generic as well as brand Modafinil are widely available through mailorders worldwide. Generic is pretty cheap. Some places have a few restrictions on what countries they ship to, but others ship anywhere.

I guess what I am saying is that instead of pulling off a deceptive maneuver there are other options to get what you want. If the efforts taking the test should fail, you still have options.

No excuses. Cheap modafinil is there if you want it.

You are very correct bleauberry,

but adding up all the meds errr "my character" is currently on costs quite a lot anyway. Yes I agree there do seem to be a few O/S sources that SEAL the bag with AIR that smells like NORWAY, and if that turns out good then it will help. The MSLT way is just a bargain for name brand & as "the character" will be relying on it so much to get through the working day (he hates Ritalin), passing the test would be a positive thing.

If the test is a success, he'd get a month's supply for $30. Else local namebrand is up to nearly $400. O/S is a lot less but our hero is not wealthy....

Thanks

M.

This is an interesting story line you have going....A possible twist could be a mid level score on the MSLT and then a very understanding doc who suggests dexedrine. It is cheap, smooth, and has all the pluses of modanifil w/o the side effects. For me Dexedrine was a liffe saver. I do think you should either go through or observe a nighttime and MSLT because the procedure is very detailed and it might be fun to describe the feeling of the glue, the hotel looking rooms, the creepy thigns they make you do each time to see if the connections are working (like chew, swallow, turn your head, etc. Plus there is the embarrassment of walking around the hospital loooking like frankenstein for 2 hours while you wait for your next "nap"

Sr. ncrainbow,

I tried to send you a babble message but it failed. Just wanted to make sure this was intentional. :)

Sorry, but babblemail is not turned on for the recipient. Please go "back" and try again.
