Who is taking Deplin? How is it going?

> Who is taking Deplin? How is it going?
BIG TIME SUCCESS!
Since I added Deplin 7.5mg to my treatment regime, my life has completely changed for the better.
My fear is the Deplin might only work magic when combined with an MAOI. I'm going to follow my doctor's experience with this "medical food" drug as he treats more and more people with it.
In any event, my current treatment for severe bipolar depression is:
Nardil 90mg
nortriptyline 150mg
Lamictal 200mg
Abilify 20mg
Deplin 7.5mgIt is my hope that Deplin will demonstrate efficacy when combined with all standard antidepressants.
You MUST wait for 2-4 months for Deplin polypharmacy to produce significant results. Of course, some people might have a more immediate reaction. Most people seem to have a brief "blip" of improvement in their depressed state during the first week. It might last for only 1-3 days. However, it is possible that this phenomenon is a prognosticator of a more robust response with extended treatment.
Good luck.

I decided to try supplementing my 10mg Celexa and 450mg of Eskalith per day with a standard 1.5mg pill of Deplin.
I tried my first pill yesterday and got about an hour of feeling good, then about 20 minutes of hypomania. In the evening I just felt kind of tired and a little out of it. When I went to bed I fell asleep fine, then popped awake a couple hours later, which is something I haven't been doing. I couldn't sleep so I took a half of an Ambien and slept 'till morning.
Unfortunately, it seems my depression has become exacerbated today. I took a half of another pill anyway, but am seriously wondering whether I should continue the Deplin. I guess if there were evidence that it improves with time like other psych drugs I would stick with it, but so far it's not so great.

Come on Bob, we both know that it takes more than 2 days to test this drug - or any other drug. Deplin can take as long as 3 months to work. Please consider this before making a decision to discontinue it.

Point taken. However, all of us here have also taken drugs that have resulted in an immediate degradation in condition. The eternal question, whether to stick out a drug that's causing problems. That having been said, I'm going to try and hang in there.

Yes. I agree with you completely. There have been many instances when I hoped a drug wouldn't work because I didn't want to have to tolerate the side effects it produced.

Are you tolerating Deplin well so far?

Deplin caused absolutely no side effects the two weeks I took it. Just one day of feeling better but it could have been me and not the med. Phillipa

So why have you stopped taking it if no sides?

>It had a very short lived little AD response the first day, then degenerated into a little malaise that evening. Now I have insomnia at night with constant awakening, and when I take it during the day it causes serious malaise and aggravates my depression. It's only the third day of this, so I'm really thinking it would be unusual for this to suddenly turn around and start helping me. I don't think I can take weeks of this, as I was already bad off before starting it.
I was thinking about tapering off my 10mg of Celexa and replacing it with Cymbalta if I could somehow tolerate that, and then maybe reintroduing the Deplin at a later point.
I'm a very sick boy and am quite possible one of the most med-sensitive people on this board, so this only applies to me, obviously.

Money and pdoc said she's only giving it to elderly patients as can't hurt them. She said to stop it. Phillipa

Your doctor seems to have a rather discriminatory attitude towards elderly patients! How can it not hurt them? Considering that elderly patients metabolize all meds more slowly than younger patients, any med is more, not less, likely to hurt them. Cecilia

I asked my pdoc about Deplin and he seemed to think it would work very similarly to SAMe. SAMe did nothing but give me side-effects, particularly increased anxiety and insomnia. Anyone know much about the difference, is Deplin just a slightly tweaked version of SAMe to allow it to be sold by prescription? Cecilia

Deplin helps convert homocysteine to methione which converts to SAMe.

I'd have to agree. I've gotten side effects from taking my Deplin.

Yes what type of side effects as I got none. Pdoc is elderly herself so don't think it's the case and I'm not young either. On the official website it's side effects are compared to a sugar pill. Love Phillipa

SAMe did nothing for me except give me acne. At 45 that was interesting. Deplin on the other hand has been miraculous. Can you list some sources/links about it being Deplin being related to SAMe? Thanks

Is the Deplin you are taking augmenting something else, or are you taking it as monotherapy?

> How long have you been taking the Deplin? If you go on the Deplin site you can see the conversion. Folate interacts with homocysteine to make methione which converts to Sam-e..Maybe the Sam-e the body makes is somehow different from the synthetic Same-e.

I have been taking Deplin for more than two weeks, I have seen some definite improvements in my sleep cycle. I am sleeping better and feel more well rested when I wake up. I do see improvements.
However, after 9 days of taking the Deplin I went to the emergency room with what turned out to be a small kidney stone(my first) I assumed it was unrelated to the new medication.
Five days later I went to the emergency room again because I was experiencing some strange attacks. Feelings of tingling in my arms and legs. Shortness of breath, Tunnel vision and feeling near faint. I was released with a diagnosis of Hyperventilation Syndrome. I was a little bit annoyed by this diagnosis, because I was playing with my kids when the first attack happened, not irritable or stressed. I have since had several more episodes, that are not connected to any obvious stressors. I have never suffered panic attacks or hyperventilated in the past(I'm 38).
Could this be because the the Deplin? Has anyone else had a similar side effect.
I really dont want to stop taking the Deplin but I cant function like this.

It's hard for me to rule out anything for any of these meds and/or treatments any longer. I started to have some weird feelings on Deplin after a couple of weeks like joint pain, itchy rashes and a scratchy throat. I stopped it and the discontinuation was destabilizing for me. However, I may be one of the most sensitive people to meds ever to be on this board.
