Seven days on Nardil

Posted by 4WD on March 12, 2008, at 20:15:27

And zip. Nada. Nothing. Not even much in the way of side effects. Just some brain fogginess and a bit of constipation. I know it is early days and it can take more than a month to work but it is so hard waiting, not knowing if it is going to work.

I kind of have a feeling it will work. I haven't had a crying jag for a few days now but I still feel incredibly dysthymic and scared.

Here's to hoping and waiting...

Took at least 3 weeks for me to feel anything and the side effects were more brutal.

Well, I guess I can stand three weeks. I just hope it works that quickly. I've heard some people say 5-8 weeks. That I coldn't stand. I spend a lot of time sitting and staring at the walls. Just waiting for it to kick in. I talked to my pdoc today and he doesn't want to raise it. He even talked about lowering it to 30mg for a while since I am having the brain fog but I talked him out of it since I want to stay on 45 mg in hopes that it will work faster.

I can count it as a blessing that the side effects have been very minimal. Just the brain fog and my sleep is okay - I sleep 8-9 hours but I wake up feeling like I've slept rough, not refreshed, you know?

At least I am sleeping and not having any hypotension or eating problems. I feared the insomnia, the food cravings and the hypotension more than anything and none of those have happened.

At the moment I am feeling the side effects do not justify the levelling off of depression. I think its a good AD - I no longer have dips during the day, instead I have naps. I am no longer antisocial when I go out - instead I am too tired to go out. I had a lot more energy when I was off the nardil, and the whole rift of side effects is beginning to pee me off. I have lifted the dose to 75mg which is more in line with my body weight (77kg) and see where i am in 6 weeks. That would be 16 weeks of nardil therapy. If there is no appeciable benifit I may start to wean myself off it.

I am sorry you are having so much trouble with side effects. So far I am really having none exept for some constipation and the brain fog.The constipation I can treat but the only solution i have found for the brain fog is some caffeine. It seems to help some but then it raises my anxiety levels. Caffeine helps with the depression too. I have thought about just taking 15 mg of Nardil in the morning and 30mg at night but my pdoc says take it t.i.d. so for now I guess I will follow orders (which I'm not very good at) and continue to take it as prescribed.

I would say that if Nardil is not helping you after 16 weeks, it might not be the drug for you. Would you switch to another MAOI or go back to an SSRI or SNRI? I am having trouble just waitng so far and it's only been nine days. I don't think I could give it 16 weeks with appreciable results.

Hoping the 75 mg helps. Maybe you just haven't found the right dose yet. I am taking 45 mg and I weigh 51 kg so I guess I'm at my appropriate dose.

Hope you feel better soon.

Marsha

Actually after just a day on 75mg I am noticing feeling a lot better - maybe thats just placebo, or I was on the very edge of a therepeutic dose. Of course if its not working for me then I shall switch to something else.
