question about diagnosis

Posted by nellie7 on February 24, 2008, at 14:43:11

Hi,

I saw something from my medical records:

"schizoaffective schizophrenia + ACE"

Does anyone have any idea what ACE stands for?

Thanks

Nellie.

Hard to know for sure, being an acronym, but the Addenbrooke's Cognitive Examination (ACE) test battery might fit the bill. It's employed to discriminate between cognitive difficulties associated with affective disorders, and those caused by dementia.

Dear Nellie,

I'm not an MD so unfortunately I can't answer your question, but my question is: who cares?

For me the diagnosis is just a piece of paper. I am a human being and can communicate with others, that's the most important thing. The diagnosises belong to the MD:s. For you and me to know, in my opinion, is only: take good care of yourself, have enough motion, food and sleep, avoid alcohol and smoking, tell your doctor how you feel and take the medicine the doctor tells you to take.

Btw, I found a list of famous persons with the same kind of disease. I think the list is far from complete.... and certainly uncertain..... :)

I never saw that in a medical record, so it's hard to tell what it is. It could be alot of things, but not a acronym related to psychiaty that I've ever seen.

An ACE inhibitor is a type of cardiac medication for hypertension. Are you on any meds for high BP?

I googled ACE and psychiatry and think it might stand for "adverse childhood experiences". Would this make sense for your life?

Hi Richie,

You're right, it really shouldn't matter. I guess it's a little upsetting to know I have difficulty differentiating between reality and fantasy. That makes everything so much more confusing. I'm also afraid of what my family will think if they find out I'm schizophrenic. I'm usually very good at hiding it (even from myself), but it isn't easy, because their expectations of me are beyond my capability.

Thanks for the link.

Hi Cecilia,

Thanks for your response.
I don't know about adverse childhood experiences. My childhood was very difficult but only as a result of my schizoaffective disorder (which I have probably always suffered from).

Nellie.

Dear Nellie,

You seem to be a talented and perhaps a quite young person. I don't know where you live but I guess somewhere in the States. Because I have suffered of the same kind of thoughts long ago here up in Northern Europe, I'll try to help you with some advice. N. b. though that I am (or rather: was) a patient myself, not a doctor.

Let me write this time somewhat longer so that you (and the other guys some of which I already know by name) better could understand my thoughts and logic.

In my opinion, your possible confusion depends on the point of view from which you look at the problem. Personally I think that it is not the diagnosis that tells you that you have such a difficulty, it's rather other people that may (or may not) do so. For instance I myself don't. Generally, I don't like any stigmas or classifications of mental illnesses on people. Those things should be left exclusively to the experts whose professional purposes they once were made for. You see, this kind of stigmas are not a very old phenomenon in the history of mankind, and their upcoming was due to certain social reasons! The French sosiologist Michel Foucault has written about this in a very nice and detailed style at least in "The History of Sexuality". Also another Frenchman is important in this context: Émile Durkheim who has written i.a. the book "Suicide". Perhaps these books have been already discussed under the rubrique Books, I haven't yet had time to check that.

I think every human being should have fantasies, and situations to realize some of them. So the difference between fantasy and reality can only be a matter of time. It seems to me that tomorrow business will need lots of people with good fantasy and innovation skills...

I'm glad to say that your text and written behaviour seems perfectly normal to me. Btw, I would recommend writing down something daily (perhaps a diary?), it's a good way to concentrate your thoughts...

Personally I think that "Word" is the most important and original thing in this world. (see also John 1:1). According to a German sociologist Niklas Luhmann, every social system consists of communication, and nothing but communication. (see eg. "Social systems") As thinking human beings, we need good and right words more than almost anything else, and without communication a social system of human beings could not exist.

Btw: I hope you like this nice song. Me and someone else do.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yHeseOjdgZI

Do not be afraid of such things as other people's thoughts. See, they are none of your business! It's not your fault, is it? Each person has problems of his/her own. You can tell your dad something, but it's up to him to listen or not. There is only One who'll always listen to your prayers...

The existence of my mental problems, lung cancer, parkinson's disease, asthma etc are beyond my power, aren't they? The only thing I can do is to take them as easy as possible, keep myself in good condition, and enjoy life. I was still working 3 weeks ago, and may be working again after another 3 weeks. Meanwhile, I walk almost 10 miles to the swimming hall almost every day.

Many parents have great expectations of their children. I do myself because I have two healthy sons. But I try not to put too much pressure on them. Living a happy life is in my opinion much more important (and cool...) than eg. great amounts of money and anything that could be bought by it, if the latter happens at the cost of your health.

About money. If you have it, try to save as much as possible. Economic security is very important for your helth.

About hiding your illness. Well. In my opinion, if you manage to hide your illness from other people, so that you can work and live normally, it (at least almost) should mean that your illness has been cured, or at least, that the question of your possible illness is no more relevant.

I would advise you to discuss with your doctor, and if you reach a a conclusion, then let your parents know about the facts. Perhaps the doc could discuss also with one of your parents, or both, if this is difficult for you? If your parents know, it makes them easier to understand you. I hope they love you whatever the docs write on their registers.

And then: try to take it easy, try always to think about beautiful and positive sides of the coin, remember that your extraordinary brains need lots of sleep to function, because when they do, they fuction faster then those of "ordinary people" (whatever that means.... :) )and probably also some medicine prescripted exclusively by your doctor...

pls remember also that a human being is a whole system, the parts of which strongly affect each other, so that also good food, minimum amounts of alcohol or smoking, and long daily promenades or other motion are good for you and help you sleep well,

i have tried many drinks in my life... and finally i have found mineral water most suitable for me . ... :)

http://www.olvi.fi/positiivinen/tuotteet/kivennaisvedet/Olvi_Vichy/

pls do not always keep your diagnosises in mind, sometimes just let it be and forget it, BUT: still take always all the medicines you and your doc have decided that you should take,

your friend Chris
(aka Ritch)

PS. having now for a couple of days looked at (mostly) american young talented people discussing and communicating on these slides, i have to say that i'm really astonished about the strength of the new phenomenon which at least in my country is called "medicalisation",

I think that if two or more clever people having eg. schizophrenia (or such a diagnosis, which usually means the same, but not always),

meet and communicate,

they should talk and talk and talk,

about beautiful flowers, music, arts, opera, theatre, literature, chess, sports, anything...

which they can and wish to talk aboout,

and perhaps about their overall daily feelings,

about just anything but illness,

just because only a few of them are educated and professional MD:s. :)

Dear Chris,

Thank you so much for your kind, supportive and very wise words. Your suggestions have been of great help. And I liked the song you sent me very much.
Reading the list of conditions you are dealing with really put things into perspective. You are a very clever and courageous person and I wish you a lot of strength in continuing to take care of yourself and hope there will be much improvement in all your health problems.

Take care,
Nellie.

You're welcome Nellie,

did you already listen to everything on "books"?

What kind of music do you prefer?

Yours Chris

PS. Some hours ago I wrote English words to one piece from early 1970s, composed and performed by Rauli Somerjoki. I hope you like the piece itself and the translation.
