Prozac + seizure?

Posted by g_g_g_unit on February 8, 2008, at 4:58:40

sorry to be acting so paranoid, but my pdoc prescribed me wellbutrin and after reading about its potential to lower the seizure threshold i decided i was too scared to take it. so i asked if i could have prozac instead and my pdoc made a casual comment about how all ssri's have the potential to cause seizures due to the fact that they alter one's brain chemistry. i realise he was just trying to inform me but that what he said has sent my anxiety raging thru the roof. i have now been on prozac 10mg for 5 days and my questions are: a) i realise that the chances of having a seizure are incredibly low, but if hypothetically i was going to, would it be a reaction that occurs close towards the initiation of the drug? and b) if i am feeling so manically obsessive about a side effect, is that a sign that the drug isn't really working anyway? or can it become more calming at higher doses? (i am meant to go up to 20mg in 2 or so days)

Oh the power of suggestion same things happen to me and I react the same. Maybe cut down on prozac dose for a few days and see how you feel? Love Phillipa

Hi there. I can understand why you would be scared to have a seizure. I had one on Luvox. I am taking 300 mg of Wellbutrin now. I shouldn't be taking it because it is not recommended for people with eating disorders.

Anyhow, I was told by a neurologist that under the right circumstances, anyone can have a seizure (not even med related). When I had the seizure on Luvox, it was 90 degrees and I weighed about 72 pounds, and I was finishing my thesis so I was STRESSED.

Try not to think about the possibility of a seizure. Just worrying about it constantly could make you have one.

You are on a tiny dosage of Prozac. It would be highly unlikely that you would have a seizure from it.

Take care.

The chances of seizures on SSRIs especially at that dose are really very low. Very stressed anyone can also have what are known as pseudseizures, which are very common anxiety spectrum conditions called somatoform disorders. They are real seizures, but the individual obviously doesn't have a seizure disorder. Its not intentional, its just subconscious.

Wellbutrin SR/XR makes the chance of seizures much lower than the original. But its really what works for you as far as medication wise.

Also thinking too much about the potentials of every side effect can lead to be a little obsessive, not to be character assasinative because I worry too, I've had rare side effects from things but its all about informed choice, and sure it is important to know what things can and can't do.
