Does anyone know the wash out period for Remeron? I have been on it for almost a year now, I worked great for the first 6 months and now it's not working well. I was prescribed remeron due to insomnia and very mild depression, I have been 30mg and would like to taper off. I was interested in taking something natural ei: st.john's wort instead since my depression is very mild. Any suggestions / experiences on how I should do the switch with little to no side-effects?

Might post this on the withdrawal board are you new? If so welcome to babble. I'm very different it seems when it comes to meds I tried remeron for sleep only for a month and then just stopped it. But you were on it longer and it worked for you. I sincerly wish I could answer your question with some knowledge but I bet someone come along who can. Phillipa

yes I am new... can you tell? Remeron worked great for a few months, but has suddenly stopped hence my decision to stop taking it all together. I am tapering off so was wondering how long it takes to completely wash out of my system.

Hi maryjo, & wellcome!
I'm just wondering if you were put strait onto 30mg to begin with? If you were then actually decreasing the dose to 15mg (or less) may bring back the sedative effects you require. Remeron is an odd drug in that the more you take the less sedation you get (in general).Otherwise, what are you trying next? Trazodone? Thats a pretty similar med which seems to act as a good sedative & antidepressant for long term use. I believe the switch can be done virtually immediately.

Yes, I started off taking 15 mg and increased it to 30 a few months later. Ever since I increased the dose, my insomnia / anxiety crept it's ugly head back.. Ive never tried Trazodone and i'm not really sure if its available in Canada, we don't get the good stuff around here..

Why did you increase to 30 in the first place? Maybe you should try 15mg again before quitting?

Remeron does not need a washout. It is often combined and overlapped with other meds.
Tapering off it and experiencing withdrawal rebounds is another story though. You might want to hop over to the withdrawal board to get suggestions on taper schedules and things you might expect during the process.

Mary Jo,
As one who is currently tapering Remeron, I recommend that you do it very slowly. The recommended schedule on the Paxil Progress Board is 10% of the current dose every 3 to 6 weeks.
I tried to go slightly faster and paid dearly for it. So until I get my digital jewelry scale, which will enable me to accurately measure the cuts, I am not making any further ones. You can get one on ebay by the way.
The reason for the slow schedule is your brain needs the time to make the necessary neurochemical changes. You might be one of the lucky ones who can taper more quickly but you won't know until it is too late.
Hope this helps.
