Can Seroquel CAUSE anxiety?

Posted by Basia on January 18, 2008, at 8:30:00

Hi

I was on Sulpiride for ten years and have just slowly down a changeover to Quetiapine (seroquel), the reason being that I had hyperprolactinemia and my periods stopped therefore thinning my bones. For the first 3 weeks the Seroquel has been great and has given me uninterrupted sleep for the first time in years. However, this week, with no external triggers, i have felt increasingly anxious and everything looks very surreal, including people. I also get blurred vision and the walls can move slightly sometimes. Does anyone have any idea of what this can be? I'm hoping it's the result of my nervous system adjusting to a drug that acts on different receptors to Sulpiride, which is a benzamide I believe. I am also hoping it will fade. My consultant said I could either increase it to 400mg from my current dose of 300mg or decrease it and see if the anxiety lessens. This painful knot in my stomach is shortening my breaths and driving me crazy! I also get this feelings of rushing electricity in my limbs.

My diagnosis is Bipolar disorder and I also take 400mg of Lamictal. I came off Carbamazepine slow release in October with no problems.

Thanks for any help or ideas

I've not heard that. Doesn't mean a thing though. Sounds like maybe you are in the UK. I will google seroquel and see what I see have you been here before if not welcome. Phillipa

I've just been prescribed low dose Seroquel for treatment resistant anxiety and panic attacks. I'm on a much lower dose than yourself - 50mg at night. I've only just started taking it, and my doctor said that Seroquel can increase anxiety and panic when staring the medication, as the brain 'adjusts' to the effects the drug is having on chemicals within the brain.

He also said that any increase in anxiety should only last days rather than weeks so maybe you should stick with it and take a benzodiazepine (if possible) while waiting for the beneficial effects of the Seroquel to kick in.

Take care!

I had a bit of anxiety when I first started seroquel, mostly as it seemed to make my heart beat faster..that quickly passed..but I only take 50 mg at night..used to just take 25 but had to increase cause of Nardil induced insomnia..

Thanks for this. My doc has given me seven Lorazepam tablets to use PRN in cases the anxiety is too hard to deal with. Fingers crossed it's all only temporary!

cheers
