Usually, yes - esp. if you get the generics.

At my pharmacy, a 30 day supply of any TCA is less than $10 US. You might check online at some of the bigger pharmacies -- Walgreens, CVS, Costco -- which do post their pricing for many drugs.
Hope that helps.

I just checked, and I'm wrong -- many of the TCAs are under $10, but desipramine is about $25US for 30 tablets. Still -- most of the TCAs were about $6US for 30 tablets.

I thought you lived in Canada with universal health care? Your local mail order pharmacies in Manitoba like Jan Drugs and the like can show the cost of these things.

Universal health care? I don't know what that means. I don't pay for doctor or psychiatrist visits (mind you you need to wait 10 years to see a psychiatrist), but I do have to pay for drugs if I don't have coverage.

It costs me about $100 to fill a prescription for generic venlafaxine and generic olanzapine. I cannot afford this when I loose insurance this coming march.
I don't know if a doctor would be open to the idea of a TCA. Seems to me I could cover what these two drugs do with say elavil.
The olanzapine was prescribed to counter the venlafaxine insomnia.

> LinkadgeHmm.. I'll have to look into that -- I know there are provincial differences to some extent but I thought there was coverage, as you say, even if you had to wait for it -- I know about the triage there and people do take out american insurance for dire procedures. But it still beats what we have.

Not too sure myself. But as far as I know, if I have no insurance, I pay the price thats on the pharmacy recipt. I don't know how else it would work. Employment usually provides some coverage, but I am not employed.

Your actual coverage is described in length among other places at

My mistake.

I just wanted to that I believe almost every psych drug in Canada, with the exception of a few like lexapro/cipramil, are available generic here in Canada. Generic Zyprexa..Lamictal....EffexorXR...etc. And they are cheap, and do work well. Actually, even the original brand producer's price is still cheaper in Canada for some reason.

I realize, but generic olanzapine is still $50. I don't want to have to pay that if I can get generic doxapin or something to help me sleep.
I don't know how it works because up till now I was covered under father's employer. I am under the impression that without insurance, I pay whats on the pharmacy recipt.

> LinkadgeYeah, you;re right.. as a dependent you would be covered. You'd have to be employed, which is your business of course. The employer would cover some things, or you would use a portion of your salary to take out private insurance which is mostly used for prescriptions in your country, unless you find yourself in a hospital of course. There are low income assistance programs, I don't know much about it though.

Well thats the catch. I got out of the school plan because I had coverage with my father until march.
The school would only cover me till april anyway so its no big difference.
Either way, the coverage would end in the spring.

If you live in Ontario, why not just get in the Trillium program? I live with my folks and have it. They (Trillium) pay for all my meds. You may have to pay like a 10-20 dollar a year deductable, at most, if you aren't working. I remember about a year ago getting a stash of like 300 Zyprexa at once, not paying a dime, thinking how much this was worth! ha. Go for it. You can get the enrollment kit at your pharmacy.

I will speak to the doctor, and perhaps to the pharmacy.

> LinkadgeActually, it doesn't matter how much **they** make.(Esp. if over 18) They (Trillium) never ask...and if they did, just say you pay room and board. The only thing they care about is what **you** make as shown on your income tax form. Thats the way it works for me and others I know of. Just *get those forms* and fill them out, and send them in, because you are losing money every second you don't. I just got my Prozac, Topomax, Risperdal and clonazepam, 485 bucks worth, courtesy of the Ontario government yesterday. Merry Xmas. :-).
