Is this possible??? (Lithium)

Posted by becksFLA on November 13, 2007, at 18:02:31

I have pretty bad social anxiety, and possible cyclothemia. I was on the lithium 600-1200mg daily, more recently 600, now 5 days off completely. The past couple days I've noticed a huge change in my personality, My mood seems much better, and because of that, I feel much more outgoing, easier to talk to people at work, laugh, blah blah...Can the absence of lithium have caused this?

Thanks.

Hi Becks,

I was only on 600mg of Lithium for 2 weeks but I swear it increased by anxiety and I didn't want to leave the house.

Within two days of going off of it, a large part of my anxiety went away. Not all of it as I do have ongoing anxiety / panic issues, but I swear the Lithium (for me) made it a lot worse.

Glad to hear you are feeling better. A good thing!

Shelly

Thanks shelly, I'll see if it lasts. I still do have the anxiety that you speak of as well....but before it really was crippling. I was hoping today just wasn't one of those random "good" days, and more likely the lithium. I'll see in the days to come...

I posted this before....I've known lots of people that it has worked miracles for. Just becuase you see one or two posts, you cannot count it out. The majority of the times I post, are when I'm not happy with a med. 90 percent of the time when I'm not posting, I'm on other meds, you just don't know about it because I';m happy with them.

(What I'm saying is there could be tons of happy lithium users out there that have nothing to complain about).

oh ok, sorry maybe that was just the wrong post, at the wrong time.

If ever go on lithium its going to be the lowest dose.

What about Topamax.

The lowest dose to start, then you never know. Like I said, it could do wonders for you, like so many others. They don't prescribe it for nothing. You won't know until you try. I have not tried topamax.

Hi,

I'd give it more time; withdrawing from any
drug, especially in the first week can bring
on a stimulated state, sometimes even hypomanic
which changes your outlook and behaviour.

you mean hypermanic? hypomanic would bring me down correct? I simply feel the opposite. Anxiety has been lifted...which has always been a theory of mine, I believe much of my anxiety is caused by depression.

thanks
good to hear from ya again squiggles.

Yes, i meant hypermanic. I'm sorry about
the header mistake too; i'm not sleeping well
these days, and sometimes i am very careless.
In bipolar disorder, mania and depression are
like heads and tails on a coin.

NO, i meant hypomania!!!! I got seduced by your
correction.

Hypomania means you are manic, but not so manic
as found in florid manic-depressive states;
an example would be, more energy, less sleep,
intense concentration, but not so out of the
ordinary as to be considered pathological.

Interesting that nobody caught me on this.
