Comparing Strattera and Stimulants

Posted by saturn on November 2, 2007, at 20:19:08

How do the cardiovascular effects of Strattera compare with stimulants?

Has anyone here been intolerant of stimulant cardiovascular effects but done well with Strattera?

Also, does Strattera help with or worsen anxiety?

Thanks...Saturn

I thought straterra was good I wish I had stuck with it. It did not worsen my anxiety, but unfortunately it was the same or worse than rit/dex in terms of cardiovascular issues.

It raised my anxiety. It also made my cardiovascular system feel like it was failing. Its a great stimulant, but at the same time, drained my energy. I had a hard time getting out of bed, dizzy, and wobbly walking.

Strattera at the time i was taking a diffrent medication with it, and it skyrocketed my brain, i was in a bad mood alot. It definerlty increases attention and alertness alot, but its not the enjoyable kind. Its more like a irrtibility kind.

But it all works diffrent.

So link do you take anything for ADHD? I can't tolerate stimulants and doubtfully Strattera. I think TCA's would be even worse. Stimulants worked amazingly. I've been kind of hopeful about guanfacine (Tenex, Intuniv) but everyone seems to say it does little for attention.

No I do not take anything for ADHD. I do not have the full blown disorder. I manage symptoms by doing things while studying. For instance, I take papers out running with me, or learn on a treadmill. For me it is mainly restlessness and a noisy mind. It has been diagnosed as bipolar like symptoms but it doesn't do well on mood stabilizers.

before we begain to use the word "multitasking" as some sort of hororable challenge, the social scientists used the term "oversaturatiion"

If you do try Strattera, watch out for an increase in depression/depressive symptoms...

That stuff was great for concentration, but sent me into a spiral of despair. I'm not exaggerating -- I sort of collapsed in on myself. It took quite a while for me to start to feel better again. Search babble for "strattera depression" and you'll uncover some old threads about this (including at least one that I participated in: http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/20060724/msgs/670439.html )

YMMV, of course... but here on babble, at least, not many people have been fans of atomoxetine.

This is the end of the thread.
