Luvox, Prozac and SSRI drowsiness (question)

Posted by psychobot5000 on October 18, 2007, at 17:10:29

I have a good friend who is taking Zoloft, loves it, but finds it makes her very drowsy. Is anyone aware of another SSRI that would be likely to cause less drowsiness (she found lexapro worse, and Paxil doesn't seem a correct choice...)? I've heard Luvox can be good for that, but posters on this board seem to think Luvox is bad for drowsiness. Anyone find Luvox better or worse on that score? Was Prozac significantly better?

Thanks,

Well my responses to meds are wierd. So none of the SSRI's make me tired they rev me up especially prozac but luvox makes me sleepy so if I react the opposite to others luvox may be good. Phillipa

funny, read my post in pro-life on prozac.

Sorry i didnt read this, before i wrote it.

Prozac has provided my life to be functional, with out being miserable (now sometimes i am very miserable from things that happen during the day) but it has changed my life.

Its not something "i love" its some thing that is vital to me.

@your#1fan
Repeating the same phrases over and over again is not very meaningful and it won't answer psychobot5000's question, since this is not what he asked..

@psychobot5000
Fluoxetine suppose to be the most activating SSRI! Luvox doesn't even come close to it. The only alternative that i can see of, is sertaline or an SNRI.
In case your friend decides to try sertaline, i would be interested to know if it caused less drowsiness since i have never tried it myself. I will be monitoring this thread. :-)

I appreciate your note re: fluoxetine --it does seem like a good idea, and she's never tried it.

Sertraline is actually the one she's currently on (zoloft is just the brand name). It makes her quite drowsy, more drowsy than cymbalta, but less than lexapro, though all of them do it enough to be disruptive.

Sorry, i misread your initial post. I thought she was on fluoxetine (prozac) right now and it was prozac that make her feel drowsy.
Ok then, since sertaline is causing the drowsiness, it is definitely a good idea to switch to fluoxetine!

How long has she been on it? Drowsiness usually goes away after 8 weeks or so... She can always take it at bedtime as well...

Good idea - she does take it a few hours before bed, rather than in the morning, but it only lessens daytime drowsiness somewhat.

It happens that in this case, a significant portion of the drowsiness has persisted long-term (she's been on it a few months), but it's true that the effect lessened somewhat over the first six weeks or so.

Thanks for your thoughts!
