Is there online pharmacy for Ensam patch?

Posted by Meagan on October 24, 2007, at 16:06:50

I live in the U.S; my insurance won't cover Ensam patch; anyone know of an online pharmacy that I might be able to purchase Ensam for less?

Sorry if this is not an answer to your specific question, but have you thought about trying oral selegiline instead of transdermal selegiline (EMSAM)?

I know that the delivery of this drug orally effects blood level, and different metabolism effects action, but you can always give it a try. Responses to oral selegiline appear widely divergent: some respond incredibly well to 5 or 10 mgs per day (a dose where selegiline is still a selective MAO inhibitor, inhibiting only MAO B, which means you do not have to follow the MAOI diet), while others respond only to doses of 30 mgs or higher (at which time selegiline loses its selectivity and inhibits both MAO A and B, which means you do have to follow the MAOI diet), while others DO NOT respond to oral selegiline while responding well to EMSAM, (and vice-versa).

Anyway, oral selegiline is much cheaper and available in generic. Of course, if you would need the higher dose, it would amount to roughly half of the cost of EMSAM.

Just a thought in case you cannot find EMSAM cheaper anywhere.

if you type in emsam in search,
the first post is Emsam - First day
theres probably about 300 threads there
in those threads is a phone number to a pharmacy where they found emsam cheap & posted for all
i briefly tried to find it for you, but was unsuccessful
That lady Phillipa seems to know a lot about this website & may know what i'm talking about
good luck

Thanks, Warface, but I have been on oral selegiline low dose and need to go up. My doctor suggests the patch so that I can avoid dietary restrictions

How was your experience with oral selegiline? Did it alleviate depression, improve concentration... do anything positive? Did it work and then poop out? How much were you taking?

Sorry for all of the questions, I'm just very interested in hearing about oral selegiline in doses where it is still selective.

Sublingual selegiline should avoid dietary restrictions (almost?) as much as the patch does, and will also promote much higher blood concentrations than oral dosing, like the patch, as it avoids first-pass metabolism.

It did all those things, including reducing the "disconnect" between my thinking versus feeling process (became more unified). I kept having to increase the dose from 5, to 10, to 15, - don't think it pooped out so much as I needed to find the right dose; so my next option is to go to the patch. I think the dose of oral selegiline at 15 probably was good for me, but don't want all the dietary restrictions.

Hope this answers your questions.

Meagan

I read the article you cited; it is not clear to me how Zydis compares at higher doses than those in the study; I'm curious about what dose of Zydis is equivalent to 6mg of the Emsam patch - at a higher dose, could it be as effective, and without dietary restrictions, as the patch?

Dear SG and Meagan,

I face the same challenge as Meagan: my insurance won't cover Emsam. I can't afford private pay. Can you give me any online referrals? Emsam seems like my last hope for tx resist dep.

Feeling desperate but holding onto hope,
ANewoman
