I was on Zoloft in 1997. It worked for a while, but then pooped out on me (life story with meds).
I remember it made me very nauseous, but I don't remember any other side effects.
What side effects did you experience on Zoloft? Was weight gain a problem?
merci.

No weight gain, but severe insomnia and anxiety.
I also had memory problems and confusion. Probably because of the side effects. You might be bipolar if ADs tend to poop out.
Sometimes lithium can augment the effect of SSRI./Netch

Oh, I am bipolar type 2. Paxil made me hypomanic, but no other SSRI did (oddly enough).
I've tried lithium several times but I get toxic on it even at low dosages and no one knows why. I also have hypothyroidism and lithium is not a good med when you are already hypothyroid.
I'm complicated. I also have an eating disorder - anorexia. Maybe that's why I can't sleep. I have been restricting heavily.
Thanks for the info on Zoloft ... now I remember the insomnia.
I've been on every med - SSRIs, SNRIs, Wellbutrin, MAOIs, Tricyclics, anti-psychotics, lithium, depakote ... you name it, I've tried it.
I hate my life.

I tried Zoloft a couple of years ago, but only lasted about 3 weeks. It turned me into an angry bitch! I felt like I was going to explode, which is so unlike me. Not good for me, but I know others have done well on it.
Have you asked your doc about Provigil? For some, it has mood-brightening effects. I am in Canada (Provigil is known as Alertec in Canada), and my pdoc was going to let me try it if I can't tolerate Concerta. He uses it for some of his patients. What about Lamictal? For some it has a profound AD effect, as well as mood stabilization.
Just some thoughts. Good luck to you. I hope you find something that helps.

I think you should consider remeron or seroquel.
I get the feeling you're avoiding these meds because of your anorexia.Don't let your anorexia decide... let your insomnia decide ;-)

I don't understand how any doctor would prescribe Adderal to anyone suffering from anorexia... it makes me sad.
Sorry for asking... but how much do you weigh?/Netch

Hey, Girlfriend -- Zoloft is my favorite of the SSRIs, and the only one I'd take again at this point. Some initial GI side effects, in the first couple of weeks, but after that there was virtually no problems for me. Except apathy and emotional blunting, which can sometimes be a good thing. Initially, I lost weight on it, and over six or so months I probably did gain a little, but NOTHING like on any other medication. (And remember -- I was also in treatment for my ED, AND getting fertility treatments. In fact, I know I gained some weight when the fertility doctor said I was too thin to conceive.)
Overall, in terms of side effect profile for me, Zoloft was far and away the best of the SSRIs.
I hope that helps. I also hope to see your name in my email...

> /NetchYou are correct in writing that I avoiding these meds because of my anorexia. Remeron made me gain 15 pounds or more in 2 weeks. Seroquel made me lactate so I don't know if I would gain weight on it because I wasn't on it long enough.
When you have an eating diorder, it usually wins. It's easy for others to see it as just a question of making a choice, but I can't. The ED demon is stronger than me.

Oddly enough Adderal has no effect on my appetite, not even when I started it. I have also been on the same dosage for a couple of years. I have never abused it by taking more. I wish I could take a small dose in the afternoon for when my energy and concentration starts to disappear, but I daren't ask my pdoc. When I started taking it, my pdoc said that if I started to lose weight he would take me off it. I've recently lost 20 pounds, but only because I have increased my exercise and restricting.
Thanks for caring.

((( Racer )))
I know, I want to send you an email, but my mood has been so low. You will get one today. :)
I remember the stomach upset from Zoloft. A pdoc in the hospital was going to take me off it because he thought it would make my anorexia worse. It did for a few weeks, but then it stopped.
The other thing I now remember is that I trouble with "word find". I hated that. That didn't go away. But right now, I need to get my mood up ASAP and then try to think of what else I can do.
Have you ever not taken a med because of weight gain? How powerful is your ED?

Now I am wondering if I should try Luvox since it is sedating. I was on that once, but I don't remember if it did anything.

>Of course I have! Then again, like you with lactation, I have a problem that interferes with being able to take a lot of drugs in the first place -- hypotension. Unexpected close up views of the carpet are one thing if I don't leave the house, but that's hardly improving my quality of life, you know?
As for Remeron, though, here's what I've read: European doctors don't have as much trouble with their patients gaining weight on it or being sedated, because they start off with higher doses. Apparently the lower doses are much more sedating and much more likely to cause significant weight gain. Higher doses have far fewer problems in that regard. It might be worth talking to your doctor about trying a higher starting dose...
So, Parnate was a bust, huh? Have you considered the rTMS? I have, but... My pdoc has a lot of good things to say about it, and was even sending patients up to Canada to have it before it was approved here. Otherwise, my pdoc is a fan of Abilify to boost anti-depressants.
Word find on Zoloft? Is that where you... ah... you know... Yes, I've had trouble with word find, but that's been a problem with most of the meds I've taken in the past few years. Or maybe it's just brain damage. I don't know, but I understand the frustration.
I'm sorry I don't have anything more helpful to offer. Only that the only meds that have been mostly weight neutral for me are Wellbutrin and Zoloft.

My experience was a tiny bit different from Maxime's -- methylphenidate stimulated my appetite A LOT when I started it. So much so, I stopped taking it. When I tried again, it wasn't so bad. Honestly -- I think there's something in the biochemistry of eating disorders that can make us really wonky with medications.

ABSOLUTELY! Our brain chemistry is messed from lack of food, or if one is bulimic, purging messes everything up as well. No doubt about it.
I'm so down right now.

Nope, can't take Luvox as I had a seizure while taking it. I've just read about how caffeine can make things worse and when I was taking the luvox I was consuming A LOT of caffeine because I was trying to finish my Master's thesis.
Frustrated.

I started 50 mg of Zoloft yesterday and I feel nothing. No nausea, no anxiety ... nothing. Maybe when I get to a higher does I have side effects. Funny, the last time I took it I had a lot of side effects.

That i am only at a starting dosage and that my body is reacting differently this time for some reason. Sadly, I fear it will not work.

I hope that keeps up for you. Truly, of all the SSRIs, Zoloft had far and away the fewest problems of any severity for me. The only problem I had with it was a bit of apathy, although that was at low dose. At higher doses, I had some insomnia, but other things were going on at that time, too.
I hope it works for you, and I hope you can keep some hope alive for it. I'd hate to see you give up before it has a chance to work.
