Abilify....my doctor may think of it. But lithium.

Posted by your#1fan on October 12, 2007, at 23:56:40

I have been having not manic episodes, just alot of mood fluctuations, spartic energy waves come from me. Im not stable.

My doctor i know for a fact may think of abilify, but he is in near his 80's and has been using lithium since he started treatment in the 1950's.

What does abilify do, does it increase motivation, how does it differ from lithium....

LOL... I let you be the judge of his competence.

Abilify is a partial antagonist to dopamine (D2) receptors. It means that it modulates the dopaminergic effect... at some receptors it will stimulate, at others it will inhibit.

Abilify is indicated for the treatment of acute manic and mixed episodes associated with bipolar disorder. It can have an AD effect and improve motivation. But it can also cause fatigue and stabilization depending on dose. Side effects can be fatigue, anxiety, akathisia, headache, nausea and insomnia.

First, you've never answered my questions about getting a second opinion. What is the compelling reason you don't do so?

Secondly, it's worth trying Lithium. It sounds to me as though you're anticipating problems, when it might just be that it is the magic bullet you've been looking for. Yes, there are potential problems -- but it's the gold standard for mood stabilization for a reason: it works.

I know you're anxious about this. Maybe concentrating on getting past the anxiety so that you can give lithium a chance would help you more than thinking about all the other alternatives?

I hope it does help you. I sincerely hope that you can find what you need to move forward with your life.
