This summer, I tried Nardil at 45mg and had a window that I felt the best I had felt in years from anxiety/depression. One day in June I went out of town for two days and forgot to bring my meds. When I returned, I started taking 15mg of Nardil and felt the same. I know, I know, I made a mistake.
Then in July and August, I moved and made several other big changes in my life. And I have not handled it well. I felt just as bad as Ive ever felt in the past 10 years. I returned to the 45mg dose of Nardil four weeks ago, and have not returned to how I was feeling before. I am scared.
Do you think I can feel how felt before on Nardil? How long do you think it will take? I am hoping not the 8-10 weeks it took for the initial effect. Has anyone quit Nardil and then got back on it? If so, how long did it take for it to kick in for you?
I am also taking 3mg Klonopin and 100mg of Seroquel. I am completely lost. I am so worked up right now with panic and anxiety I am wondering if any med will calm me down.

i have learned over time that anxiety ITSELF can halt a drugs benifit,at some of my worst times,i was so scared of a drug NOT working or simply a new drug itself that i felt immune to any relief.
My personal advice would be stick to it,and use your klonopin as needed to get past that initial fear filled time frame your in now.
Once the med begins to help,you wont even notice how your defenses seem to have gone down,but i know your spot and it is a scary one,one i find myself in now and then,and i dread it.Luckly it never seems to last,i feel i actualy owe that to having my benzo i can trust on in its consistency,so guess there is something to say for benzo fears eh?

Hi,
I've been off and back on Nardil about four times in the past eleven years. It has always seemed to work again for me, usually in less time than my original six weeks or so. However, I have never returned to that initial euphoria when Nardil worked for the first time. I believe this euphoria was mild hypomania and is a side effect of the medication, not the antidepressant effect. It felt good, but in my case I think I am lucky that it did not return.

I am on Nardil, plus a TCA, Nortriptylline. There are only a few sanctioned meds that can be given with Nardil and many doctors are too nervous to combine Nardil with anything else.
Ugotta has the article ("Current Psychiatry", Vol. 1, No.6/June 2002) I used to show my pdoc that other meds, though not offically sanctioned, can be given safely with Nardil. The article is at:

If a patient has insomnia on Nardil, Doxepin or trazedone is recommended. (Michael... have you tried Trazadone or Doxepin for sleep in place of seroquel? Trazedone is particularly effect for sleep)
Recommendations for afternoon drowsiness or insomnia are stimulants including Pemoline(18.75-35.5 mg), or d-amphetamine (2.5 to 5 mg***I had a hypertensive rxn to 10 mg***, should have stayed below 5.0 mg) Ritalin (5-10 mg) or modafinil (50-100 mg) to be given in the AM or afternoon when drowsy.
Th article was written by Drs. Cole and Bodkin, researchers and Sr. Psychopharmacologists at McLean Hospital, Belmont,MA and Harvard Medical School.
Does anyone else have other more recent articles that address other medications that can be given with Nardil? I will look for these too.

I am sorry you are going through this. You might want to switch the seroquel for zyprexa. I know that worked well for someone here. Also, you can go higher than 45 mg. What about trying 60 mg?
Also, since your life is a little upside-down right now, I think you should combine therapy with your meds.
One more thing: with all your moving around, was your Nardil expose to a lot of heat (I have no idea where you live). That lessen the effects of any med. Maybe try a new batch from the pharmacy.
I believe you will feel better again. It happened before and that's a good sign. :)

Wow, those are great ideas. Maybe a TCA like amitrypteline (spelling?) would help since it is sedating.

Yes, I carry my meds with me, and it was hot in Ga. this summer. The Nardil was never exposed to direct sunlight, but they got a little warm. Is there any evidence that says the heat negatively affects the Nardil? Thanks, Michael
