Question: Doc Wants me to start new drug 'Seroquel

Posted by tboybmx on October 6, 2007, at 15:55:13

Hi Everyone
I'm new here and I would like to know any info on Seroquel also why would Psyc prescribe this to me? I have been suffering with Panic disorder with some Agoraphobia (less agoraphobia now than before, which could be because my wife is with me all the time right now).I use to take Ativan .5mg as needed (usually once a day, no more than 2 doses a day) Then I finally got the nerve to try Lexapro 5mg (cut a 10mg in half)but had to stop the Lexapro as by the 4th day at night I got very paranoid and discontinued it. so they gave me more Ativan but I said I was worried about addiction because I had been taking Benzo's for more than a little over 3 months. so my Psyc asked me to take Seroquel 25mg at night and 25mg during the day.

Seroquel did actually work a bit for my anxiety and social phobia, however it just makes me too sleepy which is why i gave it up and only use it as needed for sleep.

Nah it doesn't work stright away for anxiety, it was more a thing that kept working the next day after wakng up, although it didn't really take that long to put me to sleep, about 30 mins and that was only a very low dose, about 12mg (biting a 25mg tab in half)

Seroquel is officially an antipsychotic. It is occasionally used for anxiety disorders, but I don't know about its use in panic disorders.

It will not work right away for panic like ativan does. It may take a few days for an effect.

Some people find it very sedating so it is probably best to take it at night.

I would personally have tried a different antidepressant, perhaps paxil or zoloft which are approved for GAD, seeing as seroquel is not.

The doctor may have prescribed seroquel because you said lexapro made you paranoid.

That's what I think Because I've read that bipolar people shouldnt take SSRI because they can have a bad effect....so thats what the doc thinks I had when I took lexapro hence the Seroquel prescription I was given

Bipolar??? Maybe mention this first the next time as it would definitely make a difference in why he prescribed it. Phillipa

Same with me and taken benzos not increased doses over 35 years believe it or not and they really don't work anymore. Tried seroquel once and so dizzy I almost fainted. Never again for me but that is me. Phillipa

Unless you've been formally diagnosed with bipolar in the past, or if you had a significant manic reaction to lexapro, I'd think it would be a little too early to say that you have bipolar.

The antidepressants can often cause "start up" reactions in many users, including unipolars. This can manifest as anxiety, insomnia etc etc.

Just be sure that your reaction doesn't fall under the category of a start up reaction.
