Sore Mouth (Yuck)

Posted by zana on October 3, 2007, at 10:02:55

Since increasing seroquel (100mg) and Emsam (9mg) at the same time my tongue has been so swollen that the sides are sore from rubbing against my teeth. How weird is that? Anyone else have this happen? Anyone have an idea which med is doing this? It's really uncomfortable!

I'd call my pdoc. A question for him/her. Good luck must be horrible. Not only that if swelling is concerned it could be a reaction to one of the meds. No throat swelling? Phillipa

No throat swelling and have emailed pdoc... just waiting for reply. Yes, it is horrible. It's horrible being on meds with side effects (are there any that don't have side effects?) and horrible being off them! Some times it gets me down. Some times more than others.

I am on Emsam 9 mg for just about 5 weeks. Last week I went through some (pms week and probably Emsam really kicked in)anxiety, hyperness, dry mouth and had the exact same thing. The sides of my tounge toward the back where they rub against my teeth were sort of raw and extremely sore. I did notice that I was doing this weird tounge-sucking thing that I associate with amphetamines or feeling speedy. I am also on a small amount of adderall.

Take a b-vitamin complex. Helps with your nerves and some causes of oral soreness.

Take Care,
Kaye

sounds exactly the same. my pdoc just phoned me after i sent her an email describing my symptoms (very unusual to get a phone call) and said it worried her, that it could be an allergic reaction and wants me to take off the patch and see my primary care doc. i was really suprised because she is usually so low key about things. so i am seeing my pcd on friday and did take off patch. i do take vitamin b suppliments. hasn't helped with this. i've tried dry mouth tooth pastes, special mouth wash etc. nothing has helped. i'll let you know what my pcdoc says and if this goes away without patch on.

Did you have this when you were on Emsam 6? (nm)

I didn't but It was not stimulating to me and I wasn't taking anything with it to make it so.

At about week five for me it kicks in and that is when I have a little anxiety. Passes pretty quickly.

I think my mouth was irritated because it was so dry but I don't think my tongue was swollen. I know it's much worse on the 9's.
I've been off all emsam now for a couple of days and i think it's getting better already.
I you have an experience like this on the 9's?

I have this happen with emsam as well. It's not due to a swollen tongue. It's due to tongue sucking (which causes some temporary tongue expansion) and moving it against your teeth. Over the course of a day this will certainly make ones tongue (and even teeth) sore. It comes and goes for me. It helps to avoid anything stimulating (caffeine, chocolate, provigil, amphetamines, coke (you know stuff you accidentally eat all the time)) and not to not get stressed out or focus on something for a long time. A small price to pay for the relief emsam provides.

Thanks for starting this thread

I just signed on to post about the mouth thing

this morning i wanted to cry

i cracked half my molars from clenching my teeth as a SE of ssri's

now i am on adderall and i am doing the obsessive the tongue against the teeth at times
chewing gum helps if i am careful
but somedays it is bad
and then i suck on my tongue when i sleep
the discomfort gets extreme
tianeptine makes my moods better and my mouth thing worst

i have run out of AD's to try
what i am doing now keeps the depression kind of at bay
isn't there something that specifically can help relax this?
i have my dentist working on smoothing out everything he can but my tongue will find any irregularity

wish i had seen your post before i went to my pcp who said she thought it was an allergic reaction. my pdoc took me off emsam and now wants to wait 2 weeks to "clear the slate." easy for her to say but if it is an allergic reaction what other choice is there? I think you may be right though about the tongue rubbing....

Dr's have a tough job trying to strike a balance between being cautious and treating a problem. If I were the Dr I'd no doubt err on the side of hardly ever handing out a script. Sorry about the two week wait though, I know that's tough

Avoiding all stimulants and chewing gum are the only things I'm aware of. However with the way mine comes and goes, I suspect avoiding all carbs might make a difference as well. I sometimes eat only salads (with no dressing) for days at a time, and I suspect those are the times I have to deal with this issue the least.

I agree and I think letting things settle and getting a fresh start will be a good thing but am really nervous about the two weeks. Thanks for your support.

Boy, I admire your discipline. Who knows, I may retry the Emsam because even though the restrictions on medications made me nervous it worked really well as an antidepressant and I've been through all the SSRI's and combos (other meds added in.)
