antipsychotics can cause OCD sx?

Posted by iforgotmypassword on September 28, 2007, at 18:21:40

this is from wikipedia, and not flawlessly edited, but i am wondering if there is any truth to it, or if anyone else has experienced anything like it describes.

"low doses of the newer atypical antipsychotics olanzapine (Zyprexa), quetiapine (Seroquel) and risperidone (Risperdal) have also been found to be useful as adjuncts in the treatment of OCD. The use of antipsychotics in OCD must be undertaken carefully however, since although there is very strong evidence that at low doses they are beneficial (most likely due to their dopamine receptor antagonism), at high doses these same antipsychotics have proven to cause dramatic obsessive-compulsive symptoms even in those who don't normally have OCD. This is most likely due to the antagonism of 5-HT2A receptors becoming very prominent at these doses and outweighing the benefits of dopamine antagonsim."

i mean to say that it does not cite sources, rather than it is simply just from wikipedia. from a political standpoint i'm obligated to adore wikipedia. ;-)

thankyou.

Well I wonder why OCD takes longer for an SSRI to work than other disorders. As far as the antipsychotics seems to contradict itself. Wondering if all the step I had as a young adult gave it to me as I had a year with step all the time. And now I have autoimmune disorders. Intersting thanks Phillipa

*Absolutely* Risperidal produced prominant OCD symptoms in my mother which abated upon withdrawl.

SSRI's are proposed to work in OCD by activating gabaergic responces in the frontal cortex via 5-ht2a activation.

Not exactly sure. I have just read bits a pieces.

I know that inositol is supposed to work in OCD via its seccond messenger effects from 5-hta/c acitvation. Also mushrooms and mescalin 5-ht2a/c agonists have some theraptutic effect in OCD.

Cyproheptadine, a 5-ht2a/c antagonist, reverses anti-OCD effect but not antidepressant effect of SSRI's (according to one study)
