Parnate or selegiline question

Posted by Sheilac on September 27, 2007, at 9:09:04

I currently use Emsam 6mg. patch. I can't find a pharmacy that carries it and I found it is VERY expensive.

I have been pretty happy so far with the results, I would like a bit more.

BUT, with the cost, I was thinking of switching to a generic MAOI in a pill form.

I like the chemicals that are being effected with the Emsam.

Which is a good choice to try out - Parnate or Selegiline? They would only cost about $10.00 compared to the very expensive Emsam.

Are the same chemicals effected with all of them?

EMSAM is transdermal selegiline, so fram that standpoint, oral selegiline would be more similar to EMSAM. My understanding, though, is that the delivery system makes a big difference in "feel" between the two.

In general, though, the MAOIs affect the same neurochemicals: MAO A and MAO B. Selegiline is more selective for MAO B, although I'm not sure how that difference affects its performance for anti-depressant action. Taking it orally, though, would mean sticking to the MAOI diet.

If you don't have insurance, you can look into patient assistance programs from the drug makers. http://www.needymeds.com/ has a lot of information about these programs, and it's a great resource if expense is preventing you from getting the meds you need, or that work best for you.

I hope that helps.

Ive been on parnate a VERY LONG TIME,and it now takes a larger dose to achieve much less benifit then at start. However initialy it can for some feel like a godsend when started.

I waited anxiously for the arrival of emsam as a option to leave parnate,HOWEVER i simply could not ignore the success rate i was keeping track of,so i opted not to.

THIS SAID,ive used the med LOOOONG before emsam in a version of LIQUID DEPRENYL.In fact when parnate was unavaible to me,liquid deprenyl was a decent replacment.

I dont know why,but its simply touted to be much much more potent then the deprenyl pills for parkinson pre emsam.

Liquid deprenyl is dosed i believe 1 mg per droplet, and is very potent,it also goes very well with a benzo.

I could not evalute it in more depth as its extremly expensive, but i find personaly without trying nardil, that bot parnate and LIQUID DEPRENYL,NOT EMSAM to be for some very similar and very effective.

...And my two cents worth. If it is working for you don't change a thing except maybe increasing the dosage.

Personally, whenever I have discontinued a good med I have never regained it's former effectiveness. Now I squeeze every bit of life out of a good one and hang onto it for dear life.

I have heard that the MAOI drugs are better in this regard than many others though. That people go on and off of them without losing much effectiveness so there is that too.

Good Luck! Yes. EMSAM is pricy-I have been without insurance since I started it. ouch!
