Luvox CR finally?

Posted by Kristopher on September 24, 2007, at 15:02:57

Luvox was the first psychiatric drug that I was put on in December 1999 for OCD and I remember it working wonderfully. The only side effect it had for me was sedation and I subsequently went through all of the other SSRIs trying to feel as "normal" as I did on Luvox but without the sedation. The closest thing I found was with Paxil CR but I did gain some weight on that. I then went on EMSAM when it came out here in the U.S. - like April '06 if I recall - and I've been tapering down over the last few weeks because I don't like the anxiety and sleep problems that it seems to cause me. That led me back to the drawing board (or I guess the "babble" board) and after some searching and some additional Google searching, I discovered that Jazz Pharmaceuticals is planning to introduce a controlled release version of Luvox in the beginning of 2008. Maybe this will be it for me? I'm keeping my fingers crossed and will be checking the press release page frequently. Perhaps Luvox CR will solve the sedation problem that I had with the original. (The CR version of Paxil was much better than the IR in my opinion.)

In case you're wondering, I got this information from:

Kristopher

But wouldn't this make your more sedated as it would stay in your system longer?

I hadn't thought of that. I guess it depends on what they mean by controlled release. For Paxil CR, I believe it was actually more of a delayed release because the Geomatrix coating prevented the tablet from dissolving until it was further down your intestines. I'm assuming that would mean fewer GI problems - maybe - but you've got a good point Linkadge. I guess, like everything else, we'll just have to wait until it comes out and then wait for our own babble trial.

Thanks for that information. It's one I haven't tried yet and I'm running out of options.

It's the only one I can tolerate as it doesn't cause the anxiety. Maybe I can do without some of the bensos. But if twice a day dosing is what you do now if dose exceeds l00mg. How will it be different but so far I've only gone to l00mg this time. I get very anxiety when I wake up and take no meds during the day. This could be great news for me. I'm pleased to read and thanks Kristopher. Phillipa

Hey guys. Just how sedating is Luvox? Not in the same league as Remeron and Trazadone, right? For me, Remeron didn't wear off until late afternoon the next day.

I don't want that much sedation. Anyone know? I've got a pdoc appt tomorrow, and I'm thinking of trying Luvox. Thanks.

No absolutely not at least for me. At high dose of 250-300mg was energizing at one time. It just doesn't give the agitation other SSRI's did to me. Phillipa

I never found Luvox sedating and I went up to 300mg over a period of time

Well, I'll soon find out. Filled a prescription for Luvox today. Will post my findings.

Cheers.

I've been on Luvox for years for OCD, at least 10 and it has worked wonders and saved my life.

Now my husband and I are thinking about getting pregnant and I'm learning that it is not safe and I may have to switch to something else and I am terrified!!

Did anyone else ever go through this? Any advice?

Why would Luvox be unsafe?

I'm sure you have your reasons. I'd like to research the matter further, and it would be helpful for you to describe in more detail the warnings you encountered.

I found this:

http://www.wellmother.com/articles/ssris_pregnant_breastfeeding.htm

The article doesn't treat Luvox as being more dangerous than other SSRIs.

Great article! I googled pregnancy and Luvox and it said that the medication could be potentially harmful to fetuses. They had some data from a study that said that they had given it to pregnant rats and all the babies die. I know there must be other things I can take it's just that Luvox has been such a miracle drug for me and why mess with something when it works you know?

When my daugher in law became pregnant a couple years ago her doc took her off celexa right away. So i would think any ssri is off limits while pregnant.

So what do you do if you NEED to be on meds?

Let your ob-gyn weight risk of taking them. I don't personally feel they are dangerous. Phillipa

As to the poster saying she doesnt't personally think they're dangerous is very bad advice. What is that statement based on? There apparently are studies showing that ssri's can be dangerous to the fetus. Are you aware of any studies showing they're not dangerous?
