prozac keeping me awake

Posted by Happyflower3 on September 24, 2007, at 15:16:21

am feeling much better on Prozac now, I am not requiring as much sleep as before. But now I am having trouble getting to sleep and staying asleep. Then during the day I NEED a nap, but that is a catch 22 because then I can't sleep at night. It is after midnight before I get to sleep and then I wake up at 5am! ick! I am always someone who needed there 8 hours, so 5 can't be enough for me.

I guess I need to force myself somehow to get past those sleep afternoons after a night I didn't sleep well, and try to stay awake. I hope this is one of those side effects that eventually go away.

One positive side effect is that I seem so much more creative than before. Maybe because I am not sleeping so much, and am awake. lol.

That's EXACTLY what happened to me when I found a drug that helped me (in my case an MAOI). My experience is that you just have to deal with it.

It sounds like you don't have a 9 to 5 job which is a major blessing.

Anyway, my solution was to try to get to bed early (meaning 12 or 12.30), take benzo's/Ambien/Lunesta/whatever every other night or so -- and I have to take triple the recommended dose. Then, if I was awake I'd work or do whatever. I did and still do take a nap when I'm sleepy. Screw the clock; if I'm sleepy I go to sleep; if I can't go to sleep, I take a pill; if I wake up after 5 hours of sleep, I get up and go to it!

And one other thing. Don't EVER take steroids unless you'll die without them. I took them for a week once (to clear my sinuses for an MRI) and averaged maybe 2-3 hours of sleep per night. I was an absolute wreck and freaked out so badly during the MRI they could hardly even finish it.

What dose of Prozac and when do you take it? Perhaps the dose is too high and if you take it at night you may want to take it in the AM or vice versa. Sometimes simple changes are all that is needed for a med to work in synch with your sleep/wake cycle.

If you don't want to add a second medicine to fight the insomnia that prozac causes, then it is ideal to switch to a less long-acting and stimulating SSRI. (Since SSRIs seems to work well with you) I don't know which. You could try paroxetine.

Sertraline (zoloft) kept me awake too, but it only lasted about 2-3 weeks. then it was back to normal. Try an antihistamine to help you sleep if you wake up too early. good for allergies too. I have fall allergies like CRAZY right now.
