Zyprexa to Lithium

Posted by Phil on August 23, 2007, at 15:42:34

After my pdoc told me to bootstrap myself and find my bliss(I think I yawned)he said one option would be to replace Zyprexa with lithium. I'm also taking Lamictal, Clonazepam, and Cymbalta for bpII.

I just don't care a whole bunch about getting off my @ss to do much of anything. Lingering depression, etc.

Wondering if people have thoughts about this change?
Thanks
Phil

Phil lithium is the gold standard for BP. My father in law took and does wonderful on it. Too bad when he was younger they didn't have meds like lamictal and cymbalta. Hes 85 now and doing great in a retirement community as long as he stays on his meds. Good luck if you should change. Phillipa

Yeah. I'm thinking I'll do it. Was on lithium before I was dx'd bipolar. Using it to augment.

Different set of circumstances now. Different mix.
ho-hum

Not sure if appropriate med, Phil, but would a stimulant be something to consider?

I was on Ritalin and then Adderall for years--I loved it. Now my doc says Provigil. Provigil was a baby aspirin to me.
What I really want is to be manic for a while. Let me loose. lol

Hi, I just saw your post. If you haven't already, I think switching from Zyprexa to lithium may be a really good idea. If you're feeling really lethargic, I would guess Zyprexa may be the cause. I was on it only briefly while waiting for my antidepressant to kick in, but even at the lowest dose of 2.5mg a night, I gained 3-4 pounds a week and could barely get out of bed and function in the morning, it made me so tired. Despite all the side effects and toxicities, lithium has been the most effective mood stabilizer for me. I wouldn't say it's in itself motivating, but it keeps the depression and anxiety at bay, which makes me better able to function. I took lithium, Lamictal, Klonopin, and Prozac together, which is just one different from your combo with Cymbalta. Getting off the heavy-duty antipsychotics really helped me function better. Good luck!

Hi CareBear, I started lithium last night(600mg) and dropped my 5mg of Zyprexa down to 2.5 for 4 days then will stop. I'm getting a good placebo effect already. : )
I'm very hopeful with this combo and look forward to being off Zyprexa.
Hopefully I will be able to do away with Snickers being my favorite food group. Maybe I'll even have enough energy to get out of bed on weekends.
Thanks for all the input everyone. I'll give an update as changes happen.
I'll take all good karma I can get.

Just wanted to say I admire your talent for making plans for yourself. (I can't think of the perfect word. It's self-'something'! It's like self-control, but that's not it. It's like intestinal fortitude, but that's not it. It's self dash another word. Any1 know the word stuck in the back of my throat??? Seriously. I've been finding and losing this word a lot recently.

The above attribute has escaped me too often lately.

My wish, if you should chose to socialize this weekend, or stay inside and rest, Phil, is you be receptive to harmony and give unkind interruptions little attention. (U might wanna' throw a couple capsules of fukitol in your pocket.)

I've got a feelin' this wkend will be a good one. (I know; certifiable!)

Wkends seem to come w/ those socialization expectations, at least w/ me. I just like to wake up Sat morn', smell and consume the brew, play fav' music, ladeeda around, and sort of act on whims.

But, often I give in to socializing. W/ this comes the risk of 'painting the town black' or awakening Sunday morn' to thoughts of 'where did all that money go?'!

Just left the pute for a moment and remembered the word! Lost it once on my way back, but quickly drew it from memory again. Hooray! It's *self-discipline*!

I need to work on this very good quality. You've already got it there Phil.

If you, or any1 for that matter, can spare some, 'cuz I'm really jonesin' it, will you throw it my way please.

Sending warm pink2red2pink vibes Phil

Those vibes sound good. lol. Funny post too. And thanks, I reckon.

I went to Amazon this morning and had amassed a bill of $250.00 before my third cup of African Kitamu coffee. Buzz--in! I canceled and didn't buy all that stuff.

That vacuum cleaner was a good deal though. Dickies shorts were cool. Denim shirt--need that. Calvin Klein underwear--don't really need that.

I was headed for the watch section when I caught myself.
