Bipolar Addictions

Posted by twinch42085 on September 1, 2007, at 18:21:07

first of all I am not labeling anyone. I just have a question about being bipolar. Do people who are bipolar tend to have a more addictive nature then those who are not bipolar?

Thanks,
Twinch : )

T,

Substance abuse is a big problem with Bipolar. I'm sure others will share their experiences with you. You might want to go the substances abuse board. You will probably be directed there.

I self medicate to feel better because im always down and depressed with life, so i need something to excite my life. I also think it has something to do with the risperdal that I take. It is a strong dopamine blocker which is a feel good chemical in the brain. I think im not getting the sufficient amount that I need since the risperdal is blocking so much of it. But is does help with the mania.

thanks : )

I can only answer for myself. . . I have an addictive-type personality and have repeated overspending problems. I don't abuse drugs or alcohol so I suppose I should count this as a blessing. :) AnneL

If antipsychotics are making you feel so emptied as to self-medicate, you should try a different drug.

Appropriate doses of mood stabilizers are so vastly superior to any antipsychotic in my opinion. So is cannabis.

They probably have some use in interrupting a manic state -- but for daily use? Ridiculous.

Yes, I do use it on a daily basis. Ive been using risperdal for 7 months now. I am definitely telling my pdoc that I want to try something else for my mania. I am also taking 50mg of lamictal.

I think its probably true. I think there is an unmet need in bipolars, especially in the depressed state where there can be a severe lack of pleasure.

The SSRI's probably don't quite hit the spot.

Bupropion might be a good option for bipolar depression.

yes....... well from my extent, i have to Lithium or Zyprexa with out going on a crazy shopping spree.

When im with my frineds i will by so much, i have gone over drafted, then just went into the dressing room to change too look a new person.

Unstable ness, never enough, always something.

I do enjoy having mania but it causes problems in life. Even it feels good to me.

Always doing the same thing, i need to think of new things to do.

But when you have mania your mind feels expanded.

I so relate to the feeling of having an expanded mind when I am manic.

I need to put my expanded mind to better use than buying stuff I think I "need". I racked up over $10,000 in debt last month. The pain and shame (once I crashed and became depressed) has been so immense. It has been an incredible eye opener for me. I now finally believe that I have a mental illness, other than depression. How long did your mania last.

See the funny thing about my mania is that it happens in a matter of hours. Which is not documented in DSM.

It can last all day. I can you one thing Prozac increases mania with out a mood stabilzer.

I hate spending and smoking.

Anyways i do i have Manic depressive syndroms.

But not to full extent.

But for some reason when your manic you do things you dont usally do, i dont.... for some reason.

Well excuse me, i do things that are out of the "way" like usally im not in the mood to it like talk about a movie to someone at blockbuster.

Like that....kinda

when I am manic I spend money, conduct in substance abuse and creat a lot of anxiety for myself. I just don't know the statistics if people who are bipolar tend to have a more addictive nature than those who are not bipolar?

thanks : )

Just this past month was bad enough for me [mentally & emotionally] to make me consider being bipolar, though i believe it's "subtle bipolar"....not too sure since I haven't been formally diagnosed, just according to literature and such.

In my experience though, i definately have an addictive personality, to drugs, shopping, cigarettes, alcohol.

So having an addictive personality is part of the criteria, count me in....
