Lithium

Posted by Amandafran on August 10, 2007, at 16:39:08

I need some help. Any info on Lithium anyone could give me would be great. I was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder yesterday and they are about to start me on Lithium. I have heard nothing but horror stories and am scared to death of starting it. How does it make you feel at first..are the side effects bad..what are they? Is it something that makes you feel euphoric while taking it? Does it make you feel zombie like? I just need some answers...I have a lot of questions...
Thanks.

Hi Amandafran,

Good luck with the lithium. I started long ago.
At that time I was in the depths of the strangest depression and agitation. Within a week of takin g it, i felt as if i was rescued from a deep well of despair. It felt like a reboot-- very strange.

I had tests before, and i hope you did-- extensive tests. For three months I felt very heavy and lethargic, thirsty, and had to nap every day. It was a very cumbersome experience, but almost for the first time in my life i was happy.

Within 6 mos. i had to have my thyroid tested and if i recall correctly was given thyroxine supplementation.

You can look up "Rx" lithium for more details.

good luck,

Squiggles

I started lithium four years ago. Im on 600mg .6
It has been a life saver and I after a few months have had very little side effects. Its worth trying, everyone here has a story...but they are not always the same. Hang in there!!

Lithium has also been very helpful for my condition .. It has not helped with anxiety but has been very helpful at keeping my depression tolerable. It has very few side effects for me and I am taking 900 mg day. Don;t listen to all the bad things you hear about it, it does have bad side effects for some, but very for for other people. Go into your trial with an open mind and give it a chance.
