How to lose Effexor wt gain after stopping ssris

Posted by jjamas on June 5, 2007, at 14:26:12

I stopped taking Effexor when I got pregnant almost 2 yrs ago. I no longer need it, but still have some of the weight I gained from it. As for most that gain on ssris, its all in my belly/love handle area. How do I lose this weight? I heard its harder when its medication induced weight gain.

Are you sure this isn't pregnancy related weight gain?

My own experience is that the weight I packed on with Effexor started slipping off as I tapered down on it, and I was at a normal weight not long after I completely stopped it. I can't remember what happened with Paxil, which also packed on the poundage, but I think I lost the worst of it pretty quickly, without doing much of anything.

As for whether or not it's harder to lose medication-related weight, I think that's actually pretty complex. On the one hand, weight regulation is a very complex system. It's not nearly as simple as "eat x calories, expend y calories, weight change = y-x" It's got a lot to do with hormones, neurochemicals, etc. So, any drug which alters those systems for any length of time will alter weight regulation. On the other hand, anything that alters those systems will also affect weight regulation, so any sort of weight gain can do the same sort of thing. Pregnancy will change your body for far longer than the gestation period, for instance. So can age. So can any number of things. So, my short answer is that it's probably no harder to lose the drug related weight than any other weight, once you've stopped the drug...

Hope that helps.

I agree you need to excercise cruches for the belly or if there is a good health club facility let them set up a program for you. And most have baby sitting services. Good luck. Love Phillipa
