Parnate - no dizziness today (so far)

Posted by Malcolm664 on May 29, 2007, at 0:01:21

I posted a message yesterday about how I fell four times while on my way to the bathroom last night.

Well it's now 12:39 am and...no dizziness at at all.

Very strange indeed!

Anyone care to venture an explanation? I know that Parnate (and MAOI's) cause hypertension if you eat something that's on the prohibited list. I don't think that I did, but could have. Could that have been it?

What I'd like to know is whether high blood pressure (hypertension) has some of the same same symptoms as low BP? (dizziness, loss of balance). B/C I'm thinking that perhaps I ate something I wasn't supposed to, didn't realize it, and as a result got dizzy during the night and as a result fell flat on my *ss four times).

(Now losing your balance and falling is never very funny, but I'd expect that if anyone were around when it happened, they might have been on the floor laughing their *ss off.) It WAS pretty funny to watch.

Anyway, back to my question, are the symptoms of hypertension (again, loss of balance, dizziness, etc) the same as hypotension? B/C that's the only exlanation that would make sense (Although I didn't experience any of the other signs of hypertension (chest pain, shortness of breath, headache, etc).

Malcolm,
Sounds to me like a case of hypotension. If you have not been on MAOIs very long and rise suddenly, the dizziness, etc. is a very common side effect. They symptoms of hypertension are very subtle or nonexistant until the BP is very high. I went to the walk-in clinic today for a sinus infection. The nurse checked my BP at 160/100. I had them recheck it, because it has never been that high. Normally it runs at 130/70 or so. After a couple of hours, that is what it measured at home(127/72). The MAOIs act as an anti-hypertensive medication, unless you are increasing your tyramine level also. I did drink several cups of coffee before I went to the clinic, but I've been doing that for 10 years on MAOIs. Anybody have an idea what may have caused the spike in BP. I hadn't eaten anything yet on that day, so I don;t think it was tyramine.

Well this is the first time anything like this has happened since I started the Parnate, so I was actually hoping that it would happen again (to let me know that at least I'm continuing to have some reaction to the med - even if the reaction is negative).

For all of these weeks it's felt like I've been taking sugar pills. And the dizziness yesterday (combined with my lack of coordination while rowing) are really the first signs that the med is beginning to have some effect.

And I haven't been following my doc's orders to avoid coffee (b/c otherwise I'd be even more solemnolescent that i already am);

I've been taking about 800 mgs of caffeine tabs on most days since starting the Parnate; that's WAAAAAAAY too much I know, but if I didn't I'd be asleep and wouldn't be doing anything productive - not that I'm that productive anyway these days.

And as I said, I start and internship in a few weeks, and really need to be extremely alert as I'm trying to get a job as a personal trainer. I doubt that I can start an internship like this by having to explain to the boss that I'm on some med that cause extreme fatigue and ask them to make allowances for that; what happens when I actually start training clients?

The thing is that I'm terrified of failing at this but my doc refuses to prescribe Provigil - acc. to him, it's too dangerous to be combining any kind of stimulant with an MAOI.

Any ideas on how I can convince him otherwise? I know that there are others on here on MAOIS and Provigil at the same time with no probs.

Sounds like hypotension to me..I was on Parnate for about a month and had to go off it due to that..however, it did kick **s for my depression and I'm going to start it again tomorrow..and get up slooowwlly..I also had lack of coordination thing going on too..will have to see if that happens again..

I love very strong coffee but am going to mix decaf and regular..because I really want to give it a good trial..unless I'm lying prone on the floor all the time..

I used to wonder what my dog thought and I was crawling on my hands and knees to let her out for a pee!
